My '07 1500 had a hard plastic lip that extended over and past the top the tailgate. I imagine for some owners it seemed a little pointless, but the way my rafting frame sits atop the bed rails, it worked perfectly to keep my seat joints from hitting the top of the tailgate.
My '17 has a bedliner that ends flush with the top of the tailgate, and we have to wrap those joints in a towel to keep from scratching the paint at the top of the tailgate (which we've already done - the hail damage guys touched up the spots but not very effectively.)
Anyone retro-ed something similar for their tailgate lip?
