Hey everybody I'm new here. I've been reading a lot of the threads and I'm just back and forth on what I want to get. I'm looking to trade in my car and pick up a 2500. I had a 1500 after my first deployment but I got rid of it because it was only RWD. I'm coming up on my second deployment in a few months. I don't want my car sitting here and collecting dust when I can have a truck that can be getting all the upgrades I want. I won't be towing much, but I will if I ever PCS or get another boat. Would a the Hemi or Cummins be a better choice. I found this by my house in NJ. Is this a good deal or should I just buy new?

Used 2012 RAM 2500 SLT For Sale | Boonton NJ.

Any more info would be great thanks!

Welcome to the site and first stay save with the upcoming deployment as for the truck I have been in a similar position, I had several Chevy 1500s then went to my first Ram-a 2500 HEMI. I loved the look, stance, and capabilities it offered but not the poor gas mileage. After 10 months in the 2500 HEMI I traded it for a 2013 Cummins with manual 6 speed. I love it! It is a quad cab true blue ST tradesman not a lot of bells and whistles but manual and has backup camera. From what is have been seeing looks like a tradesman is a good bang for you buck truck. It gets way better gas mileage than the hemi - for me 16 mpg before now 22 mpg CTD.
From what I read and seen the 2012 will not have the DEF requirement which is less maintenance cost, however with the CTD it is built for work and does best under a load. So if you aren't going to tow or work it you may may think about the HEMI, maybe even a1500, which will pull a boat with plenty power if you Dity move your next PCS. Maintenance in 1500 is easier and they are truck of the year!
However for me the WOW factor is nice and the manual is awesome, here is an ideal on you, with the next deployment see if there is an overseas sales group and order one you want with all the fixings!!! It is way cheaper and saves a lot! I did that with my car and trucks, then when I got home they were waiting at the dealership, awesome.
These are my opinions other may disagree, hope this helps? Good luck and satay safe- which branch are you in? semper Fi Joe. :biggun:

Thanks for your opinion man. I was back and forth, but I have been looking a lot of things up. I've been test driving the Hemi and Cummins. Well today I went to a few dealerships around where I live and I didn't find anything. Then I looked on the web and found a great deal on a new 2013 Cummins SLT HD. I drove out of dealership with it this afternoon! I'll post some pics soon.

for asking 40K on that used truck isn't bad at all. could have got it down to 36-37k without issue.

but seeing as you bought a 2013 CTD then congrats fella ! I would love a CTD.

Thanks man, yeah I called up the dodge dealer with the used cummins and he was lost in the sauce. Sounded like he was a new salesman. He didn't know what I was talking about and had to call me back. It took him 20 mins to call me back, and in that time I found the other cummins and they were only looking for 41K. As I was driving down the first dealer called me back to tell me he had the used truck. I told him what was up and I was going to the other dealer. He then went on to tell me not to go to that dealer there just lying about the price. Well after four hours of negotiating I walked out of the dealership with keys in hand. After all the tax was tacked on I was sitting at 43K for a brand new cummins with only 200 miles on it. I'm going to go take some pictures later today and post them.

Ok well I traded in my manual 2012 VW CC. I would have loved to have got a manual cummins, but I couldn't find one. I also couldn't say no to the deal I got. This truck is a beast! Here's a pic of it when I got it back to the house. Tomorrow is the big test. I'm driving it back to base from NJ to Ft.Bragg, NC.

Congratulations on the new Cummins! You'll get better torque out of the automatic anyway. The picture isn't showing up...

Hey sorry for the delay guys. I had a busy day driving back down to Bragg. Then we had a long day at work. Well hopefully this picture works.

I was really surprised at the mileage I got on the truck. I'm not complaining on bit! The dash was saying I was still able to go just over 100 miles before I was empty.

Yeah I'm getting some running boards for it while I'm deployed. I'm also going to get a RollBak bed cover.
