Ok guys let me explain. I have a 2018 1500 express with the 5.7
I just installed the Carven Competition. While waiting to save up money for a brand name intake, i slapped on a large Spectra cone filter to the end of the factory intake tube. Heres how i got it to fit.
I sliced off the first inch off the intake tube from the airbox side. I then used a blowtorch to heatup the tubing. I then inserted a 4inch diameter metal pipe into the intake tube. By heating the plastic tubeing and then inserting the metal pipe it made an exact, very snug fit. I then attached the clamp and tightened the intake tube to the pipe. I cut the metal pipe to 6inches long and clamped down the cone filter to the other end of the pipe. It all fits perfectly under the hood. Remember this is just temporary so dont start bashing. But honestly i dont think it would preform much worse than an aftermarket system.
The exhaust sounded fantastic with the factory airbox. But after adding this cone filter, it sounds even better.

What do you guys think. I havent seen anyone else do this yet.

I think you would be better off using the stock filter and airbox until you get some extra cash.

All you did with this setup is take away any cold air that might be coming through the factory box and completely eliminate it. What you made is essentially an open airbox hot air intake. It might sound a little better but you aren't getting any performance out of it.

I also have a feeling that your cone filter will probably fall off, since it doesn't seem to be secured to anything. Vibration will cause it to fall off.

The biggest restriction in the factory intake is where it pulls air from, and the corrugated intake tubing. What you have done will sound aggressive with an open element filter, but it is now pulling in excess engine heat. I would consider making some form of air scoop that comes from the grille or under the bumper to route colder air to the current filter location. With how you have it setup now, your IAT's are going to be hotter than stock which will hurt performance, especially in these warmer months.

Props on your effort but you basically made yourself a hot air intake. Sealed box systems taking air from the best possible places are the best intakes. Air flow is important to get that IAT down.

For looks and a little sound I would have liked to do a Mopar intake on my 392 Charger but to actually get the temps down as low as possible I just put on a Hellcat lower air box and intake tube. It is still all enclosed and pulls extra fresh air from the grill. Intake temps are down 5-10 degrees in all conditions with this set up vs stock and now only 2-3 degrees above ambient unless I’ve been idling for quite a long while. The air temps drop drastically faster after getting the car moving with that fresh air coming from the grill. Even in this 90+ weather we’ve been having.

My 2500 has an S&B intake. Basically mimics all of the ways the factory box grabs air but makes everything bigger and smoothens the box out. Closed system keeps a barrier of protection from the heat soak.

Those are systems/things I’d look for when thinking about an intake set up.

If you don’t drive around to much water relocating the filter farther down into the fender might be a good idea.

This is my S&b so far the throttle response is better but will see when it’s actually cold out to see if we have better performance it been 90s since I installed it so no real cold air yet lol

First WELCOME to the group. I am no help but the other's are gear heads and gave some good advice ! BUT I think you did a nice job so great thinking ! Sounds like a bit more tweaking and you will have a CAI :) Good luck and post another pic if you redo it :)

Please change the title to “Homade HAI” to better reflect this thread. Seriously just go back to stock.
