I read through my manual and tested this; with the system in Auto mode and i press the AC button, it turns the AC on and disables Auto. I like controlling when the AC compressor is used or not used and it seems in Auto mode, i cant do that. What annoys me even more is, there is no indication if the AC is engaged or not when in Auto. am i missing something somewhere that tells me if the compressor is running or not when in Auto? '15 8.4A if it matters.

My G8 has Auto climate and when i have it enabled, the AC is an independent feature. that is, i can enable or disable AC while in auto. Maybe some people really like that the AC engages automatically with no user input but sometimes i just like to have the vents blowing with the windows down and no AC. and there's times i like to just turn it off briefly to reduce engine load when i need to mash the gas for a quick merge in traffic.

You should have an A/C button on the lower left corner of the bezel with an amber light on it indicating if the compressor is engaged.

so, would it light up while in Auto mode when the compressor engages? It wasnt particularly warm yesterday (60s) but the interior was a little warm from the sun and i swear the air was cold enough to be AC but no light came on. maybe ill wait for a warmer day and see what happens. should be 80s by the end of the week.

Compressor will usually engage if you have defrost on, even in winter when you are calling for heat, AC light will not illuminate though.....this a normal operation for most vehicles.

You're not alone. This is the first car I've had the auto climate that doesn't have and "Econ" mode where it is still auto controlled but forces the ac compressor off. I prefer outside air to cold ac on all but the hottest days.
