Hey Everyone, I just did some cosmetic changes to my truck, took off the Flex Fuel SLT and the 1500 off both doors, and dipped. I am going to try and do a write up on how to do it the best way (for me atleast). The tools i used was 1 cap of Plasti-Dip, Hair dryer, cooking stone scraper, Painters tape, Dip-Disolver, Microfiber, Tooth pic, and Patients. There are many methods out there to debadge and dip, but this is what i did.

Here is a link if you wish to buy dip dissolve, i am using a ebay knock off that work just fine, but here is the real stuff

What im starting with

WP_20151002_13_20_23_Pro.jpg

I used a cooking stone scrapper, really gentel and plastic, to help pry up on emblems when blowing so you dont cook your fingers, there a dime a dozen. DO NOT USE ANY METAL, i have seen people you flat edge blade or box cutters, unless your a ninja at those, you'll **** it up.

Everything Removed

This is what i removed from the door, Just removed the 1500, Depends on how much you heat it or how you pull the emblem off. There will be residue. I used my stone scraper to remove the gray 3m tape off. But to remove the adhesive from the door. I used my Dip Dissolver (which smells like and acts like goo gone.... Could be different, the dissolver is 100% safe on paint) to remove the adheasive, took some elbow grease but be patient it will come off. I worked at little sections at a time not the entire part.
This process will work for any badges you plan to take off.

Time to mask everything down

I would recommend if you do not have Dip Disolver or some sort of solvent, mask with towels, paper , or plastic wrap because dip has alot of over spray.

WP_20151002_14_21_47_Pro.jpg

Once you mask it, With the dip for easy removal, Spray from tape side to tape side. You will think your done after about 2 coats, but for the ease of removal do about 5-8 coats, doesnt take much longer. TRUST ME its easier. Make sure the first 2 coats are semi light and do sprits not a long spray. Dip likes to accumulate at the bottom of each letter, so allow some time before spraying, i do a coat every 4-5 min, if your doing entire truck just make rounds.

When Removing the dip the tape will help you remove the dip on the paint. Aswell when remove the interletter dip, USE A TOOTH PICK, do not use a flat head screw driver... With enough coats little effort will be needed to remove it

Once done removeing tape and dip from letters, wipe down any over spray, I used dip desolver and worked wonders. If you do not remove overspray the dip will cure and be hard as hell to remove at a later time.

Finished product

This took me about 1 1/2 hour todo the entire thing, Fairly safe job todo your self, the most risky thing is the removal of the emblems, just dont keep to much heat on it, just enough to loosen the adhesive.

If you plan on doing your grill, i personally have done both, removed it from truck or just sprayed it on. Both work fine, but the correct way to dip any grill is to remove it and dip it. If i do my grill i will add it to this post

Looks nice! So the dip just pulls off of the paint and stays on the letters. or do you trace them with the toothpick to cut the extra material away?

The dip peals around edges and since the letters are elevated the dip peals around them and comes off. The more coats you have the less you have straggling around. But since you cant peel the inside of letters from the main peel, which is the most easy to peel. You will need a tooth pick to plug it out.

I dont trust the stuff. I have my buddy do all that stuff if I need it. He owns a customs and collision shop.

Then again, I always debadge the truck anyways. And the wheels get paint if I do anything to them. My current stock wheels just got painted a matte charcoal type color, and the headlights and fogs got smoked via PPG black and PPG clear. At least I think he did that. Usually give him free reign. Truck was already in for an accident.

To each there own. But I am not a fan of the plastidip finish generally.

Still don't get many price breaks. I should far all the business I gave him. This time however it is all free since he pushed back my delivery a couple days. Told me I don't owe him my deductible money or the discounted custom work.

I dont trust the stuff.

Why not, if done correctly it actually peels quite easy, if not you need to make sure you get the dip removal stuff for easy (less than 15 min and a pressure washer) safe removal for ****** layer aplication. Learned the hard way on my VW.

If used just on badges grill and rims, no need really for any of that

I used the plastic dip on my console chrome ring-I was getting blinded. But on the emblems I just bought factory black ones off eBay. Might be easier to do than painting.
