This guy's data says engine wear is reduced the greatest amount by fewest cold engine starts. i.e. - most engine wear is caused during cold engine starts.
Three ways to mitigate - (1) run engines long miles between shut downs, (2) minimize idling, (3) use oil and coolant heaters an hour before starting.
Of course, other things may fail first, the sheet metal might rust off, the seats might disintegrate, etc. so you'd want a new vehicle anyway. But the way new vehicle design is failing now, many of us don't want a new vehicle.
