I replaced my 5.0 radio with a 8.4 Nav radio. it has 13.0 software and needs and update. How can I get an update because when i go to the uconnect website it wants a vin number and obviously my vin is connected to the wrong radio. Any ideas?

I wonder if a dealer is the only way, or if someone else's VIN would let you do it? Is the update VIN specific or do they just need it to know if the update is for a Ram 1500 and not a Chrysler 300?

What he said.....that's all you have to do. The updates are vehicle and year specific not vin specific. In other words any Ram truck the correct year with an RA4 will work.

Is the radio out of a 15? 13-14 are different software than 15.

What did it say when you put it in? Target is vp4 and software is vp3 or something like that?

Unfortunately in many cases wrecking yards will give you inaccurate information on what type of vehicle and what year the radio came out of. This has happened to many members. Did you look at the back make sure it's a VP4NA ? Sometimes they will send a VP4CA the CA stands for Canada and may take different Firmware. Does it have a (Tag )soft key right above the favorites button when you are on XM? If it does its a 2015 or newer radio. The tag soft key was not available on the 2013-14 radios. If all that checks out I would try to do a search on whatever Firmware version the radio has now. You might be able to find out for sure exactly what it came out of just in case it's out of another vehicle . Just some ideas to try to start narrowing it down. I have seen a few members having the same issues as you are having but others have installed the updates with no issues so there must be a reason....hope you get it figured out

If you don't mind, please post the radio model and actual part number off the back of the radio.

I'm trying to track these issues and identify correct RAM specific part numbers by model year to match the correct firmware and host it in my thread.

INFO - 2013, 2014, 2015 8.4AN FW Notes (RA4/VP4 NA)

Or a picture of the front and back of the radio.

It is confirmed a VP4 NA and has the tag button on the XM stations...Still no clue why it won't update

I would try getting a donar vin and downloading the Firmware yourself. Maybe there is some type of a glitch with your dad's USB stick and your radio. Did the seller provide the vin# of the vehicle it came out of? Also did you try doing a search on the Firmware version that's in your radio now. It might pop up and confirm you radio is out of a Ram. Just some ideas....probably won't work but worth a try.

If everything is working fine I wouldn't update. The update is not a map update for the navigation.

It might be a 2015 VP4-NA out of another brand, i.e a Jeep Cherokee, but no one seems to be able to verify actual PN's off the back of the radios for each model year yet.

What PN is on the back of yours? Where did you get it from?

Might be good advice. Some have had their radio get wonky after an update from the wrong brand.

Sorry, I couldn't find the picture I took of the back. I'll probably open it up again this week and I'll PM you the info...

It does not matter what brand it is from. There are only 4 software updates. 2013-2014 ra4, 2013-2014 ra3, 2015 ra4, 2015 ra3. If it is for sure a ra4 and it won't take the 2015 ra4 update, it may need the 2013-2014 ra4 update.

I agree those are the available updates for Ram Radios. Unfortunately if you end up with an 8.4AN from a Cherokee or another brand, people seem to have problems trying to update.

Happened to Indaram, here's his post.

It looks like he is talking about a difference between 14 and 15. Those are different. But a 15 ram is going to use the same update as a 15 Durango, Grand Cherokee, Challenger or Viper

Indaram had a 2015 VP4-NA from a Cherokee that wouldn't update either (he eventually gave up on it and traded the truck in for a new one with factory 8.4AN)...
I have a part# 68238619AA (From Jeep Grand Cherokee) and it wont let me update it.

Here is the system check module code..
-- MY15 DS/WK/KL V2
ecu_part_number["68238621"] = "68238621AG" -- MY15 VP3 NA
ecu_part_number["68238619"] = "68238619AG" -- MY15 VP4 NA

EDIT:
First radio:
Model VP4NA, Part# 05091051AI, Serial#
Came with 13.*** worked fine, upgraded to 15.*** Lost Nav altogether
At navrepair, hopefully to be fixed.
Edit: Supposedly from a 2014 Ram 1500....Vin given by Schramm verifies that????

Replacement radio:
Model VP4NA, Part# 68224525AD, Serial#
Came with 13.***, Nav shows (navigation activating), upgraded to 14.25.5 and same results.
Edit: Supposedly from a 2014 Ram 3500 Vin given by Schramm verifies that????

Two radios and still no navigation!!!!!!!!

I don't want to keep sidetracking the thread. I hope you are right about the different brands working in a RAM, but there are an increasing # of these fw update issues popping up after an 8.4AN swap.

Hopefully, between everyone here we can help STYSMason get straightened out.
