I refuse to put HID's in a halogen reflector. The truck is high enough the last thing I want to do is blind everyone with scattering sunlight shooting from the front of my truck. I want to do the H9's but cant figure out how to cut the damn notch off, and I dont want to pay 25 bucks plus shipping for the harness' I linked... ill pay 25 bucks for some one to send me a pair of modified H9's lol

It's not a truck from the 90s where the light is scattered everywheres. It has a cut off. When I put my highs they go right above the lows.

I heated up an old butter knife to trim the notch off.

I heated up my utility knife blade on my stove. It may seem like a PITA to accomplish, but its worth it for the dramatic difference in light output. And it will only cost you about $25-$30 for the bulbs.

i found this on the web

"It's basically a matter of different filament with different characteristics. The H9 has a 65w (nominal) filament optimized for maximum luminance and flux at the expense of shorter lifespan. The H11 has a 55w (nominal) filament optimized for long life at the expense of lower luminance and flux. Both bulbs have equal filament precision, etc."

They're plenty bright for me. Can't imagine any of the gimmick color bulbs would make a difference to me.

I agree, they are a definite improvement over the H11's, and well worth the time to put them in.

Don't really know if the silverstar bulbs would be better, just thought I would try them if I could've gotten them.

Regardless of age, the housing has not changed much. the fact that the bulb, and the reflector were not engineered together will yield scatter unless you modify the housing or bulb or both. Even Halogen reflectors with projectors (like the ones that come with some RAMs) will still scatter above the cut off with HID's as they were designed to (believe it or not). I have had many cars, with all sorts of housings and all scatter with out retrofits. Its illegal for a reason, and quite frankly get pissed off when I see it. Do it right or not at all. and the H9 conversion is the safest bang for the buck.

Post a picture of your HID's 20 feet from a wall I bet you will still see scatter above the cut off. On the flip side tho, I bet they look bad ass and give you a ton of light output, but like I said, its just too much undirected light. Maybe the Retroshop guy can chime in on this nonsense lol

Thanks for the tip! Do you have to modify the notches around the base as well or do they line up with the H11 holes as well? I have seen some write ups include it and some that dont. Im wondering if it just takes some wiggling. I want to do this with my fogs too.

The notch/tab at the bottom lines up and doesn't need to be trimmed at all.

I had to just modify the plastic socket tab so the plug would fit in. The other tabs that mount the bulb in the headlight housing were fine.

I just installed some today. The H9's you just trim the inside socket notch like the guys said above. I used a pair of small wire cutters that I had.

I also replaced the highs with HIR1 bulb's, these required trimming one of the notches on the outside of the base. Both fit great after trimming. I have not put them back on the truck yet though.

Nice write-up on the headlamp swap!!!!

Instead of a utility knife or side cutters (wire cutters), why not use a Dremel tool with cut-off wheel????

That would be fast (about 5 seconds) and no chance to slice open a finger/thumb/leg.

As I get older, I need more light, at night.

Thanks!

I'm feeling this too! Just drove home this last weekend in some weather (snow, ice, sleet) at dark and could hardly see in front of me. I made a decision then that I HAD to do something about these crappy lights.

I got mine at Autozone, Sylvania std bulbs. They didn't have the H9 in the silverstar.
