That does sound like a lot just for the labor.

Maybe get a quote from a shop that specializes in axles?

What type of LSD? Is it just the carrier that needs to be installed. Seems awfully high even for a dealer.

Is that parts and labour, or just labour?

Ya that’s really high just for labour. Labour hours for that is like 4-6. So unless their labour rate is over $200/hr that’s out to lunch.

I’d put in a Detroit Tru Track at an independent shop.

Contrary to popular belief, the world doesn’t come to an end when the warranty on your truck expires. Live a little.

Those fit on the ZF? Didn’t know they made one. Tbh I’d prefer a locker if I could find one

A local shop quoted me $800 to install the factory Mopar unit.

A Detroit Truetrac requires you to purchase an older style driver's side axle shaft to be compatible. Its not a direct swap into the newer rear ends.

Do you happen to have a part number on hand?

Anybody know of a locker for these rear axles ? The intended use is off-road not racing not sure if the Detroit would be the best for that.

To my knowledge there isn't a locker for 4th gen Ram 1500 axles.

But the low speed traction control does amplify the effectiveness of a clutch operated limited slip. Since the wheel without traction is not permitted to spin freely the LSD isn't dependent on preload to determine its level of engagement, it can hammer down pretty tight pretty fast.

In other words BLD + LSD is a whole different animal from LSD in last decade's trucks. I have a selectable locker in my other truck but I don't really ever miss it when I'm in the Ram.

Notice how im in 02-08 model trucks. Along with a driver side axle change you also have to change the ring and pinion for this to compatible. According to Moe's Performance this is the strongest available option for the newer 4th gen trucks... but you will have to pay for it.

Moe's Performance:

"The Trutrac is the strongest LSD available, but it is a more complicated swap for the 9.25ZF. You would also need to purchase an older 9.25 ring/pinion and a 2nd driver side axle shaft to use on the passenger side. That is what I run in my own trucks. Its more than double the cost of the Mopar LSD, but it is the strongest option we have.

If you just have a daily driver that you need both tires turning, the Mopar LSD is more than enough though. I race my trucks, so I wanted something stronger than the OEM.

I had a Eaton unit installed in mine. It was $670 for the Eaton and labor.

Did that include the different axle shaft? What year is your ram ?

I ended up talking to the dealer service rep in person they said it would cost 500 to install.

The primary purpose for this LSD is to keep me going in rough muddy terrain at my hunt club.

The question now is the mopar LSD adequate for off-road use.

With acknowledgement that this video is not very good and it does not demonstrate any kind of good driving skill on my part, you can observe a little bit about the Mopar LSD's behavior near the beginning of this:
Also this video is dashcam so you can't see anything about what the tires are doing, but if you'll take my word for it, motive traction was never a concern on the trip depicted here: - stops were by choice not by loss of traction.

I don't have a stake in what you decide to do but I hope the video will help you make your decision one way or the other.
