Interesting statement on 5W-30 oil being used in the 6.4 instead of 0W-40

Water Displacer, version 40. Anti-Corrosive surface treatment for warheads IIRC.

Bingo! They finally got the formula right on the 40th try after 39 failures. I usually reminded my guys of this when they try and fail on their projects by saying "There is a reason why it is called WD-40 and not WD-1 so keep trying".

Guys on this forum are way too paranoid. I use T6 in the truck, it's great oil and is 5-40, it's also cheap.

How many miles have you run your with the T6 5W-40? Have you done any oil analysis for this?

My only concern is the lack of or low moly in many diesel rated oils.

Maybe 1,500 miles on this fill, no analysis yet. I added liqui moly to the fill as well.

Thanks for the info.

Does the Liqui Moly stuff come with detailed mix ratio instructions? Have heard that stuff does turn the oil a jet black pretty quick but is still fine.

Yea it has mix ratios. It just happens that a full 390ml bottle is about right for the amount of oil we have so I put a whole bottle in.

That video has disappeared from YouTube; can anyone find it?

No but I've been running 5w30 in my truck for 5000 miles and it hasn't blown up yet. I think I'm going back to 0w40 so I feel better about it. Funny thing is the motor runs quieter now than with the Pennzoil 0w40

Yup. If the viscosity is not within the specs in the system (whatever the hell that is) it will throw a check engine light and will produce a code. I can't remember the code unfortunately but the tech showed me the print out and it said "incorrect engine oil viscosity detected" or something along those lines. When I bought my truck it had 5w20 in it rather than 0w40. As soon as the oil was changed and the start cycle was done twice, the CEL went out. Pretty sure yours was legitimately a typo otherwise you would have seen the CEL by now.
This is not true, I’ve been running 5w30 for 2 years in my 2018 6.4, no issues at all. Many guys run 5w in summer and 0w in winter as the only difference is the viscosity.

I’ve been testing my PUP 0w40 at Blackstone labs every oil change and the oil has sheared down to a thick 30 weight or very thin 40 weight after 4-5k miles. So I can see why that 30 weight is working for you.
What 30 weight oil are you running?

I run Amsoil signature 0w40. Used to use Penzoil (factory recommend)

Truck is quieter at idle with Amsoil

What's the process to get an oil analysis done? I may send off my 5w30 rotella for kicks.

Just Google Blackstone Laboratories Oil analysis. They send you the oil kit for free, send the sample back with a check for $28, and in about two weeks you’ll have your report emailed to you. Easy breezy

As far as I can find PUP0w40, Amsoil 100% syn 0w40 are the only MS 12633 oil's that meet the spec, And Mopar. Redline someone said it too but not on this list 2016 Wonder how RL vs Amsoil compare. Have been thinking about RL 5w40 also

If your still within the powertrain warranty I'd suggest you use the spec oil and spec weight. You don't want to have an engine failure and then have your warranty claim denied because the wrong weight oil was used.

I'm not saying that it would happen but it certainly could and for me it's not worth the risk....so my truck has had nothing but PUP 0-40W since new.

I will admit the mobile 1 0-40 at Wally world is cheaper than the pup I have to order to get, but I can't bring myself to use it until I'm out of warranty, so another few years for me.
