Is building a 4th gen R/T worth the effort

I'm not sure if my 2017 Ram 1500 R/T is the right vehicle for what I’m aiming for. Its a beautiful truck and I love it but seeing these chevy and ford with all their aftermarket support and how they seem to make power out of thin air makes me think my truck is a bit lacking. Im looking to build a street truck that makes 600-700 whp and wont cost me a fortune. What I want to know is if the 5.7 Hemi can do that, what it would take and how much would it cost. I realize i may seem ridiculous asking all this but it is ultimately my goal and I want to know how realistic it is.

Mopar and Cheap don't go together.
600 crank is easy,700 rwhp not so much,it's gonna take a deep wallet to build 700 reliable rear wheel horsepower
Talk to Matt Fikac at Moes and Byron at MMX for advice on how to reach your power goals
Jon Sipple for advice on a transmission that'll live.
You'll probably want to do a legit 4 link suspension and upgrade the rear end so it'll hook and not break parts.
700 rwhp isn't worth $ h ! t if it doesn't hook,spinning ain't winning

What does it take to reach 600 crank I might have had my hopes a little high expecting to make 700whp and not have to spend a lot.

What are your goals as far as what you want the truck to run,and how reliable do you want it.Do you want high 11's at 100ft DA etc.,figure out what you want out of the truck as far as 1/4 mile times go,then build for those numbers. A SRT 6.4 swap with a 100 or 125 shot will give you 600 crank.Easier to build 600 hp with a 6.4 then a 5.7.The 6.4's also have forged cranks, with drop in pistons and rods it'll be a hell'va basis to build off,the truck 6.4 heads with a valve and spring change are basically hellcat heads with a naturally aspirated intake manifold bolt pattern. If you want to add boost to a stock bottem end engine, hunt up a truck 6.4,it has better pistons then the 5.7 for boost, and it's 10:1 compression ratio is a bit more boost friendly then the cars SRT 6.4 which has glass pistons and a compression ratio of 10.9:1

I want the truck to be pretty reliable as it is my daily driver and I just want the excitement I had when I first got it. After driving it day after day it just doesn't feel as fast as when I first got it so I want to have that nice fun feeling and excitement. What I am wondering is how much power the 5.7 Hemi can make with a pretty simple build and mods. And of course how much that would cost.

There is a special section on this site for Ram R/T's. Take a look at that section. I'll meet you over there and try to answer some of your questions

He doesn't need 2 threads on this Jay,you can answer his questions just as easily here.

I'd drop a 6.4 in it,then sell your 5.7 to recoup some of your costs. The 6.4 has a better crank to build off,and that's the foundation of every engine. Then when you get bored of the 6.4 you can throw a stroker kit in it and take it out to 426

Our MMX Max Effort V2.0 Camshaft is laying down some great numbers this morning. Our 6.4L HEMI V2.0 Cam is a great way to maintain great low speed torque production, all while making some really great horsepower numbers naturally aspirated!

Of course, that's the easy route and I would do it if I had 9k in my pocket right now (not to mention labor and whatever other expenses might come up), but I don't, so that's why I am asking what I need to do for a 5.7 to see those numbers. I don't have thousands of dollars in my bank account I'm a college student working minimum wage and I want to slowly but surely build my truck. I don't have the time, tools, and much less the money to 6.4 swap it.

Short answer. NO. Keep the truck as it is, study hard and save your money. Get a good job and buy a 700hp truck later.

Honestly if that's where you're at,leave it alone, you probably don't even have the money it takes to put a decent set of long tube headers and tune on it,as that's gonna set you back close to $3,000 or a bit more even if you install the headers yourself.
As NC states wait till you're done with school and you're on your feet with your school loans paid off, then buy something that's a little cheaper to mod.
Don't want to burst your bubble, but you also have to be realistic with where you're at in life ,and nows not the time to spend money on a truck that's your daily driver.

Short answer, No it not realistic. You've received great answers so far. Use that feedback to calibrate your expectations

Ahh, to be young.

Remember when we were young and listened to what we were told? :dogpile:

OP, as others have said, No. The fun stuff can come later. Esp. if this one is your DD.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Keep us posted.

Man if I had a Ram R/T in any sort of good shape I'd be keeping it stock and taking care of it. Maybe just a muffler swap for better sound. Those things are already valuable, they'll be collectors items in another ten years.
