I am looking a getting the alfaobd app and adjusting a few things on my truck. Is there any benefit to buying this Mx+ more expensive reader than buying this cheap one.

Check and search the AlphaOBD tread and see if anybody has used the cheaper reader you reference. If there is nobody, you are taking a chance on it. Some do not work at all, while others will work only on some modifications, and there even some that change the WRONG settings in BCM instead the setting they should. For the difference in the price, you are risking way more than the money saved if you brick your BCM. There is a reason why the recommend MX is bought by 90% of those in the Alpha thread.

IRC the + which I use works with anything the regular one does plus Apple . If you are doing this for the ALFAOBD it don't work with Apple anyway . I bought the Plus as everything I own is Apple other than a Kindle which I side loaded Google play store in for use with ALFAOBD . My plus was on sale for the same price as the regular one so I said why not have the option

A lot of the cheaper OBD readers do not have the medium and high speed bus capabilities as the MX/MX+
Others have had issues making changes with the cheaper OBD dongles. AlfaOBD does a lot more than just making BCM changes, it can be use to troubleshoot vehicle problems and watch/log data in real time.
The MX/MX+ will work for probably every vehicle till the automotive industry makes the change to OBD III (wireless interface).
