I can relate. 2020 Ram 1500 Bighorn, about 83k on the ticker. It's been a great truck, but in year 5 of ownership I picked up a huge rock break from a vehicle going the other way. Fortunately I am insured, guy came to my house and fixed it. 3 months later I get another only on the passenger side. Big enough that it needed to be fixed, again insurance. 3 weeks later I hear a rock hit and did not see any damage, but yes a break appeared crawling across the passenger side. This one I did not have repaired and my question to my insurance company: are aftermarket windshields being made cheaper than factory original. Any thoughts are appreciated.
Windshields come in different grades, you can go cheaper, they all have to meet a Minimum Federal NHTSA standard, or "supposed" to.

For a while we had her parents live Nextdoor to us and i always mowed both side

One day her dad wants to mow the lawn, so I get the riding mower all set up for him and sure enough, he found the one rock that was hiding there and send it through the side window of my Passat

I'm pretty sure that was the last time he mowed my lawn

Of course now, it's my oldest' job
I think people don't know what their doing half the time when mowing.im always aware of where stuff goes coming from my mower.
I'm sure he was just helping out and that's fine but at least be aware.
Yo-yos around here mow the ditches totally throwing crap into the road as people are driving by.im on a dirt road on 3 acres..I dis-engage blades if I see a car coming by,I also rarely throw towards the road anyways let alone that could come back on me or the homeowners insurance.
I have a ****(cant type S C A G )52in 27hp..not huge by any means but that thing can throw clippings 40ft easy with the shoot up let alone a rock or limb chips no problem(ya i aint picking anything up under an inch...lol).I've whipped pine cones well over 100ft.mowing for me is therapeutic,it's my time alone..slap some earbuds in and go for a couple hours
Sorry so long and off windshield topic but I can't stand people who don't pay attention on a mower.

If you live where a windshield lasts 7 to 10 years, OEM is worth the moneey. If you live where a new windshield every year or two is common, cheapest available works just fine. I can get 4 or 5 cheap ones for the price of one OEM.
I have a wrangler along with my ram. Windshields last 6 to months.

Yup the extra stuff all costs. They charge you also to marry all up to truck. Maybe U got charged a lil too much, but the fancy stuff costs.
Safelite has bullied their way into the insurance companies and body shops, thus, they charge a lot. I purposely go out of my way to use a local joe, such as I am in the repair sector. Dear old Dad (departed) drilled that into us kids' heads about supporting your neighbors.

I do not carry glass insurance because it is far too expensive and the more claims the higher the premium goes. The car insurance companies don't even sell glass coverage in Alberta, except comprehensive for theft vandalism. You have to buy it as a separate policy from someone else. I can't afford to pay 2 to 3 thousand a year for OEM windshields. Glad your situation is different.

I’m in nj, and have comprehensive ins. 3 vehicles, that coverage cost less than a hundred bucks per vehicle.

yeah, i wasnt mad at him, just at the situation

i now sit on 2 1/2 acres and i have maybe 100 feet of road frontage
on the front i have a ditch, so obviously i dont mow that anyway (and the city brushogs it a few times a year)
if someone happens to come down the sidewalk while im mowing ill disengage the blades, and if they have a decent dog ill even drop the engine down into idle

aside from that, i always mow the same way...i make one pass inward and the rest all go outward, if that makes sense

As I understand it cheap aftermarket glass is not as good of quality as OEM so its breaks easier then OEM, I've heard that is why safelite can sell cheap and still cover your insurance deductible due to the lower quality of the glass they use....

I just got my forms for the renewal on my extra coverage.
It is 225.oo Canadian for extra glass insurance and 2x the liability insurance over the basic coverage.
also lowers the collision, comprehensive deductible by 50% ,
Same out fit as the main coverage that comes with the plates , that you have to have to get plates in this province , which should be everywhere.

I have 100.oo on glass now, use to have 50.oo , but that got to high cost.
Any time I had glass changes it is factory glass, unless it was some old truck, then what ever I could find cheap.
I remember 475.oo installed for my 67 new yorker.

This a strange thing, I remember first pistol was $75.oo for a new colt in the 1950's, First car was 70.oo, but a quick trip to the store I have no damn clue what I am was suppose to get. Never forget chips.

I replaced a jeep wrangler windshield twice in a single month. Same windshield two times at 600 per windshield. Oem glass.
The protection film, well let's just say, it works but not great. It will prevent the small stuff, but it only lasts about a year, then it has to be re applied.

Have never replaced a ram windshield, so I don't think it's glass quality, I think it's glass angle.

A hood shield stops a lot of it IMHO.
Hood shields are kind of ugly but no question about it they stop a lot of rock chips and a lot of bugs on the windshield. I noticed an immediate difference on my truck before the Titan when I put one on. I've thought a couple of times about getting one for the RAM but then end up forgetting all about it. I assume they alter the slip stream and point more air over the truck but that's just a guess.

My boss has a Ram & recommended the hood & window vents as the first things to buy, I’m sure they work but never cared for the look.

Update: collision avoidance auto brake and auto headlight brightness stopped working 2 days after windshield replacement. Coincidence??? Took to dealer to re-calibrate. Turns out the camera had quit working and couldn’t be calibrated. Replacement camera was $1,025.00 plus labor. Total $1,665.00. Only vehicle I ever had an extended warranty on. $100.00 deductible and I’m out the door.
