almost looks like a bad repair job has started to eat through the paint. It might be from gas/ethanol vapors but that's a long stretch

Should have posted pic of inside cover also, it's totally black. Replace gas cap? I have cleaned it and it came back

If you zoom in on the gas door itself the paint spider cracked.

I don't have any issues on the outside but I noticed to the black mold looking crap on the inside of the cap and cleaned it. My guess is the inside issue comes from moisture that collects allowing growth. Outside I couldn't say.

It is gas and gas vapors collecting dirt, especially after fueling.Common thing if you go too long between washings.

only time I've ever seen dirt build up around a fuel filler is on a diesel. Seen many of gas fleet vehicles that don't get washed, none have had anything like this

Good morning,

5.9 360 Magnum gas engine or 5.9 Cummins. If it is diesel, are you using farm fuel or bio diesel. Pink farm fuel tends to grow algae. If it is gas then some more info is needed.

Wish you well on the answers you seek.

Thanks for all the replies. It's not diesel. Regular gas.
