Ok, here is a question ....... Anybody ever seen a Johnson style Lifter in a disassembled state. Just wondering about the size of the orifice in the bottom. I'm going to be talking to a Machinist in a couple of weeks and going to take an old lifter to see if he can drill it. It is easy to take the lifter apart but the trick might be in drilling. just another crazy idea.
As far as hardness goes, pretty much anything can be drilled / worked with the right tool.

I'm surprised that no one has any info on these lifters. I like experimenting and like I said previously, I'm going to talk to a machinist to see if it is possible to drill a conventional lifter.

The only Johnson tappets I have seen were for a flathead Ford. I even had their wrenches to adjust them.

Carbide cutoff tool on a lathe would work well to cut through outside lifter body to disassemble.

Have you seen the price of those things? That is why the thought flitted through my mind about pulling them apart and getting them drilled. I think any decent machine shop could make it happen. Would need a good Carbide drill bit but doing a modification like that would put an end to the lifter / cam problem.

If had 2 to play with, you could also disassemble them and compare internals to the OEM ones
