Just looking for opinions here... Say you bought a 13 Ram brand new in March of last year. Say you only put 5,000 miles on it in 14 months. Say it hasn't been driven in three weeks, and does go for long stretches without being used. Say you're above water on the loan and it is obviously very saleable.

Basically I'm debating within myself as to keep it forever or sell it now while I'm still well above water on the loan to value ratio. *This is not a for sale thread, the truck is not for sale*. Obviously, life demands money and the money I'm spending on the payments/insurance could be saved or used elsewhere. I'm not desperate to save that money, just weighing options. My only debate is the fact that I'm not using the truck and it sits far more often than its' driven, so it's an expensive toy at this point.

I'm having a personal debate about what to do. What would y'all do? I realize how much everyone loves their trucks so I expect most of you will say 'keep it!' and I totally get that. I love it, and it's not an issue of being tired of it or not enjoying owning it. It's not that at all. Just been thinking about the situation and could use some other thoughts from the good folks here.

I love my truck, but if I was 'above water' as you are calling it, it'd be gone in a heart beat.
There are many better uses of hard earned money than a truck that is just a toy.
(Note to self...)

Clearly it's up to you, but if you don't need a truck, and you don't enjoy it daily (my truck is my only vehicle, almost 14k miles in under 8 months) I don't really think it's worth it!

I'd rather have a C6 or a 370Z as a toy sitting in the garage.

Well, it's worth more than I owe, is what I meant.

That's a strong opinion I didn't expect, to be honest. I got it because Chrysler was very gracious in getting me out of a bad vehicle and the deal was good enough that I jumped. And I don't regret it or I wouldn't even be creating this thread. Good thoughts, thanks. I hope I don't sound like a spoiled *******, because I'm definitely not made of money like that Geico dude. I just kind of in a weird place with the truck I didn't think I'd be in.

Same, if it was a very nice truck, and I was way ahead in the game, it is up for good debate. You could sell it, and take that extra cash and possibly just lease one..lower payment, and you can afford to keep the miles off it. Or, pay cash for an older truck so you have one to use when needed, since you obviously have other modes of transportation.

Thanks. I'm not looking to replace a payment with another though. It's this trucky or none.

5000 miles in 14 months, it's like buying a snowmobile...is it worth it just to sit there? :)

Think of it, would you put $35,000 in a suitcase and let it sit in the garage?

That's definitely one way to look at it.

Keep it. In 5-7 years itll be paid for, itll still be like new (cause you never drive it) and youll save that 600 or so a month then.

And that's definitely another way to look at it. So you see where I am with this now.

Except dont put a C6 and 370Z in the same sentence.. haahhah

For me it would tough to justify paying on a truck that sits in the garage. I love my RAM but I'm sorry if I'm going to be paying on something to to sit in the garage. It better be Vette, Caddy V, GT500, etc. Even a SRT8 Chally!!

If you dont need the vehicle, why keep it? If need one once or twice a month. There are 1000s of trucks you can buy for 5K that will serve that purpose. Probably could spend even less.

Well, on one hand it's good to see that you guys are thinking along the same lines I am. On the other hand, it's still not an easy choice to make here. Maybe I'll list it and see what happens. Or hell, maybe I won't. Crap.

A depreciating $35K, at that.
I would sell it while I could. Better to look back with fond memories than regrets.

A vehicle is a TERRIBLE investment! Always has been, always will be.

Yes, there are rare cases where a ultra low mileage classic brings tops dollar.
Guess what, a run of the mill pickup truck ain't it.

If you don't need it, you don't drive it (frequently), sell it and invest the money.
Pay down your mortgage, invest in a college fund for a kid or something.

This is the same as buying a Harley bagger, and only riding in the summer months if you live in a state afflicted by snow.

OP, depends on your long range plans. Are you going to have a need for it a few years down the road for towing or hauling? If so, I'd likely keep it because if you dump it now, and buy again later, that cost will be eaten up again anyway. If you've got no plans, and no sentimental attachment, let it go.

I've had my '13 for 7 months and has 4300 miles on it. I don't use it as a daily driver thanks to a 40 mile commute each way but I have used it to tow over half of the miles that are on it. When I use it to haul snowmobiles, or the racecar, or a friend's boat it's not uncommon to haul 2-3 hours each way and I want a comfortable and reliable truck even though the total miles may not be high. If I didn't need the truck for towing purposes I probably wouldn't be able to justify owning it. (even though I would still want to haha)
