Has anyone installed one of these aftermarket keypads that stick to the outside of your truck somewhere so you can unlock the doors without the key? I traded an F150 in on this RAM - I really like the truck, but really miss the keyless entry. I am not a fan of the idea of this system needing to 'hack in to' the electric lock circuit, but I don't really see any other option (other than carrying the 'way too big' key around with me all the time).

Wireless Door Entry Keypads for Cars, Trucks & Vehicles

Thanks,
Chris

I had a keypad just like that (which I mounted inside my fuel door) on my Titan. It was Nissan OEM and required no hardware or installation other than the keypad itself. Very handy when you go hiking or swimming or any other activity where you don't want to lug around your keys.

This solution looks like it needs a module to be wired in? Not sure I want to do that.

Not sure how it would by-pass the feature to prevent you locking your keys in your car.

I put one of these on my Ford Ranger. it worked good. But that was before the crazy computer systems of today, basically all it did was programed its self to be on the same frequency as the remote. The only down side was on the one I had was that the battery was not replaceable, and you had to get a new unit. I think it was like 65 bucks.

This should come on the vehicles from the factory like ford does. I love it on my dad's F-250, very handy!

I can see it as a convenience, but I don't know about the theory in general for me I'm glad ram doesnt have it.

Someone can watch you enter the code, them when you leave they enter the code, and can either get your keys and drive away, or steal the stuff that's in you truck. I see people use it all the time...and I personally saw them enter the code when I'm in my truck waiting to get out. I could just unlock his truck myself.

My girlfriend has it on her escape, and I just told her to use it in an emergency...don't use it every day process. I rather have that big old keyfob with me so I know that only I can get in.

BTW, the reason Ram (and many others) don't have this (anymore) is that they want you to buy their UConnect-type services. UConnect can unlock your vehicle, so no reason for them to offer a keypad and undermine their UConnect business.

Unfortunately, in the areas where I like to drive (and live), Sprint coverage (which UConnect uses) is practically zero, so the whole UConnect thing is of no use to me.

Normally and almost every scenario I have seen some one use this is to enter their car to leave. No one locks the car with it and walks away. So in order for you to "break into" their truck you would have to watch them do the code, follow them to the next place they park and walk away.

This feature WAS great, however it is now primitive with the keyless entry systems of today that unlocks with just the key fob in your pocket. Why do you need this if all you have to do is put your hand on the door handle and the truck unlocks? The only reason you would need this is if you had the normal key system, and why would Dodge make this an option when they have the keyless option available? Its redundant.

Ford either dosnt have a keyless option, or they keep this cause of the fanboys that cant seem to let go of Ford and their stupid ways of doing things with their trucks.. Like C channel frames, weak front ends, small displacement motors, and suicide doors on the extended cabs.. I would not compare Ford to Chevy or Dodge, the only thing keeping them in business is the fan boys, but their trucks are no better, and the only difference over the past 2 decades is the looks of the truck and a new motor line up.. Yay.. My Ram is way better than the F150's I looked at, and I get a better factory warranty and a stronger truck. Ford can go to hell with their old school tech.. /rant

Yeah, my wifes Milan has it and it's saved many calls to pop a lock..lol

It's one of those things you think you don't, until you lock your keys in your car.

I like how the newer ones are built into the door pillar so you can't even see them when there off.

Haha...I hear ya. I'm currently in a rental. It's a 2015 Nissan altima. Car is so small compared to my truck.
Anywho....it has keyless entry and start - stop technology. Maybe it's old school, but I don't like having my keys in my pocket while I'm driving or in the cup holder.

I'm 37 and I'm happy with my key fob on my 2012 ram in which it actually needs to be in the ignition and turned to start the car. I know some of the newer rams have this, but at some point, down the road, why will you even need at key. A retina or finger print scan can unlock and start a car.

We have a 2018 Lincoln Navigator, which comes standard with the door keypad, and we use it all the time. It's not primitive. Primitive is cars having keys at all. I'd prefer to use primary-smartphone secondary-passscode/biometric unlock and start them with no key at all. Physical car keys are a vistigial holdover from the non-digital era, and they are already starting to go away.

I use my door keypad to (a) leave the key in the car when I'm doing water-related sports, because I can't take the key in the water (b) leave the key in the car when my wife or friend might come back to the car before me, such as skiing, (c) always keep a spare key hidden in the car wrapped in tinfoil, so if we lose a key we can just keypad in and get the spare.

I am in the market for a pickuptruck and while I like everything else about the RAM 1500, I can't live without my door keypad. I found this thread to see if there is a viable way to add it to the RAM in 2023, but it looks like the answer is still no. Funny in an era where Ford, GM, Toyota all offer this feature.

P.S. Our other car is a Tesla, and while it has cellular smartphone unlock and drive, I've accidentally stranded myself twice parking the car where it happened to not have cellphone signal, so I've stopped using it. The newer teslas all have direct bluetooth smartphone to car technology, as do the new Lincoln Aviators.
