I'd start checking the harness. It sounds like either there is a short between two wires (on a truck that old, possibly rodents gnawing the insulation off is highly likely) or a corroded connector causing the same short effect.

Edit: Wait, you said it's the light in dash... Possibly still corrosion or a short, but it's going to be much harder to get at if it's in the cluster.

Yep, there's a short somewhere. You're going to have to do some detective work and physically track it down. Not necessarily difficult, but possibly time consuming. You may want to track down a wiring diagram to make life a little easier.

*edit* Use that wiring diagram to see what wires and connectors that light and the head lights have in common. And verify its only on with the headlights, or just the parking lights to narrow down your search.

Glad you found it. The short is not repairable? If not, at least you're in prime territory to be able to find a truck that old at a salvage yard.

As stated above, repairing the wire is a very viable option.

Corrosion in the bulb socket caused a short, the short pigtail with the socket and the 3 pin connector are too damaged. Local parts house has the part minus the 3 pin connector. Time to bust out the weatherpack connectors
