Hey everyone,

Finally decided to take my truck in for lifter/cam replacement after I stopped driving it months ago. Took it in to a very well reviewed shop in my area and received this quote below. Labor costs seem reasonable to me but the markups on the parts seems outrageous. Does anyone have any idea how many hours this job calls for and what a typical markup % on the parts would be?
2017 Ram 1500 w/ about 155k miles

No. 7k is too much for a cam/lifter replacment. you can do it yourself for about 1/3 that cost.

Long before I'd spend 7 grand on that, id spend 5 for a new mopar engine, and put the other 2k on labor to install it. Then you'd have a 0 miles new engine.

Shop around for someone competent and price a engine install.

Okay thanks makes total sense. I was expecting the quote to be in the 4-5k.

Yeah will give them a call tmw about the parts cost but will mostly likely shop around a bit more.
The cost of the lifters alone is hard to wrap my head around

Yea, that's absurd. You'd be walking out of there bow legged.

Considering, they quoted:

$2100 for a complete set! For that, it better come with a month supply of free ********.

Because MMX sells the standard MDS set for $900, which is pretty high. If you shop around you can find a set cheaper than that.

If you are interested in a MDS Delete, MMX sells a set of non-mds lifters for 500

Just to give you an idea, you could do a full cam kit PLUS mds delete kit PLUS hellcat oil pump for around $2500 (plus the cost of tuning)

Cam Kit plus MDS delete

Hellcat Oil Pump

I spent almost 5k for everything , Parts and labor, with genuine cam ,and hydraulic lifters set. Dig in for those parts on every site available. And you will see how much you can save. And then pay for the labor hours. Some mechanics, not all, like to gain some out the parts cost. Good luck.
