We have a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7 hemi magnum Ours has 16 plugs It has lifter picking what is the easiest way to change it do you have to pull the heads

Are you sure it’s lifters? It could be a more common issue of having an exhaust leak from a broken exhaust manifold bolt. And if you do need to replace the lifters, you will have to remove the heads

When you rib the motor up it is real bad

How long since the oils been changed and how regularly? If it hasn’t been maintained there could be a ton of sludge built up in the engine causing bad flow. Not many lifters go bad in the 3rd gens so you could be looking at a bigger problem

He keeps his oil changed regularly He said he changes it every 3000 to 3500 miles but if he has been pulling he changes it every 2000 miles and he runs the oil recommended for his truck

To look for a bad lifter you can pull the valve cover and check for play between the pushrods and rockers. If any of them are loose I'd inspect the pushrods for wear and make sure the rocker arm is torqued to spec. All of that can be done before removing the head. If everything's solid under the valve cover then I'd look for a broken exhaust manifold bolt like Chris suggests.

It was a lifter number 4 on the passenger side the little wheel on the end of it had stopped turning and was locked Thank you all for your help he checked everything you all suggested before he tore it down
