I am wanting to put 2- 20 inch light bars under my truck. One under each side and shining outward. Goal is to completely light area around truck. Has anyone done this and if so, where/how did you mount them.

I have a 2012 1500 RWD. Truck does not go off road, basically set up as a highway truck.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

What would the purpose of the light be? Underglow or lighting for a specific purpose. I used Rock lights on a custom bracket as entry/exit lights for my truck.

It is legal in Florida, I don't hate the idea for safety reasons. I always thought you can have something for people to see you on freeways, especially rainy freeways. I'm not sure I like the underglow look, but go for it. I know there are some folks here running underbody leds.

Are you going to be using them parked, as in lighting for camping etc? A light "bar" is going to be extremly bright and distracting if you are thinking of driving with it. Better of with a couple of small individual LEDs if you are looking for that under glow look.
I hate people that drive around with them on, most are over done (and pointing outwards too much) and are distracting to others.

Hi Crazy. Ty for your reply. Reason is for safety and convenience. We travel a bit and this would help in the event of a roadside issue with truck. Would help us see what we are doing and help others see us.

I have some clamp type brackets that tighten down, although did not realize truck has tube type frame with no edges to clamp to.

Hi Burla. I dislike the underglow look also. Just not my thing. Lights would be purely work lights…changing tire for example.

Hi 4x…..I agree, winter roads would destroy them in probably a few months. Nope, luckily I am in Florida

if that’s your main concern I would get a battery operated light. They make roadside kits with lighted triangles and you could look into some form of emergency hazard kit that you charge off the cars accessory plug and has a built in work light. Usually the higher priced hazard kits have a tire pump and small jump start pack all in one.

Understand about battery powered light. Not wanting to have to store it, also…..having only to flip a switch, and have lighting without fumbling around looking for a light, is the way to go in my opinion.

The main problem I see is if the alternator or truck battery craps the bed you are sol trying to use the lights. I'd go with a battery operated like @crazykid1994 mentioned. I keep a cheap battery operated one in my work beater. It's magnetic and also flashes red. I figure if I get stranded on some back road on an early dark morning and it's not a quick fix at least I can put it on the trunk with the red light flashing so I won't get rear-ended.

But putting lights under the truck isn't go to do you much good for lighting the exterior for changing a tire.

If you want under glow lights by all means do it, it's your truck. Just don't think it's going to work well for helping you change a tire like you mentioned. If that ever happens, and at night.

I keep a large D cell led mag light in my truck. Batteries have been in it for 3 years and all has been good. Swap batteries every few years to prevent them from corroding in the flashlight. Takes up very little space under the back seat. Have a military flashlight in the front center cubby for easy access. Lights under the truck are not that noticeable at a distance for roadside safety. You are better with a roadside kit. Especially if you plan on breaking down somewhere that you’ll need it. A battery jump start kit and tire pump with lights built in is fairly compact and great insurance for circumstances like you’ve mentioned.

20" LED bars would be a bad idea. I run one in my grille for high distance 600ft+ SPOT lighting, even a combo or flood would be too much for driving around. Your better off going with Rock lights or doing accent lighting on the rocker Panels if you want it for safety and it would make you hard to miss. These come in amber and switchback and relatively cheap. They also act as blinkers so they will blink alerting ppl of when your turning as well.

If you had a roof rack of some kind or Ditch lights you could add some LED pods in a flood pattern but they wouldn't be able to be used on the roads for driving.
