Hey everyone. I'm trying to get back into a Ram, and I found a nice '10 Larime at a dealer. I have a few questions. When I test drove the truck, I tried to use the heated seats and steering wheel heater, but both would blink, then shut off. The dealer said it might need a flash update. How often do these trucks need updates? Any other things I should look out for? What common problem do these trucks have?

Thanks guys!

Was it a ram dealer or a used car dealer? Tell them to do the flash. A 5 year old truck is likely to have all the software up to date but they do come out with software updates frequently when models are first released. Could be a software update or could be something else. If the lights just flash a little and shut off, there will be a dtc stored that will tell you what's up.

It was a Dodge Dealer. I forgot to say that they said they would fix it no matter what. I checked the messages on the intrument cluster, and I didnt see anything. I guess they would have to scan it to see? I'm not too worried about it, I was just curious how often they need to be updated, and what other things I should look out for?

I agree a 10 should be uptodate on all the flashes they only tend to come out with new ones after new models they should have all the bugs worked out. And I honestly haven't come acrossed anything in this forums that seems to be common problems they seem to be pretty solid. You can scan through the tech section of this forum but they are pretty soild over all.

I owned a 2010, loved everything about that truck. It did puke its camshaft at 27k but that was an odd ball manufacturing anomaly. It ran surprisingly well minus two cam lobes.

I picked up a 2011 SXT quad cab 4x4 last month and don't have any issues. I don't have the upgraded stereo or digital dash so I need not worry about updates.

Keep in mind that if the prior owner never took the truck in for service it may have never received updates. I'm sure that is a very common occurrence.

I was notified a few months back that my 14 needed a update to correct an issue that were found with the 5.0 radio on some trucks. Guess what, my radio works perfect, so why should I have them flash my system. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. :)

There are plenty of threads of owners complaining that a flash caused an issue with a function that was not a problem before. Obviously, if there is a problem that a flash my cure then by all means do it.

I would tell them to run it back though their shop and make sure everything works and call you when it's done. Happens a lot at dealer here. Some of the mechanics are too busy or last and shut always gets missed them has to go back in to get fixed before then can sell it.

Do some research on google, took me 10 seconds to find multiple links to problems with the heated seats and the light blinking. It usually means a burned out element

If they are selling it as a used truck with issues, consider that in the price you'll pay, don't be afraid to walk out either 2010 Rams aren't rare. It is a buyers market, just sayin.
