I was looking for some help and info on engine block heaters for my 05 5.7. I'm thinking of putting one in but was unsure how effective they are. My reasons are more for keeping the block warmer rather than getting heat in the cabin quick. I know I can get the one that goes in behind the starter for around $65 but was wondering how warm it keeps it and does it also in turn keep the oil warmer? I guess anything that anyone can add or provide more info on them would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Mike.

Most people that live in the far north and in areas where it gets below freezing often use block heaters. The main thing that a block heater does is keep the oil at a temperature where it does not gel and become impossible to pump. Another benefit of a block heater is to keep the water jackets warm enough to keep them from freezing during below freezing temperatures. Here are an example f a few that are around:

Here is a better explanation of what a block heater is and what they do:

Here is one that truckers use a lot: Wolverine Heaters - The Most Trusted Engine Oil Heater For Cold-Weather Starts

I have also seen some that are designed to mount between the oil pan and the block. Pretty much it is up to what you want to do and what you need. Remember the need should always outweigh the want.

How cold does it get where you are? Gas engines don't usually need heaters unless its really cold. Like sub-zero. Just use a winter viscosity oil and fresh antifreeze.

Not to cold, around 20 or so throughout the winter but I do head up north quite a bit in the winter though. I was thinking for under $100 is it worth it to keep the motor and oil warmer to reduce cold oil and cold starts. I do run a 0w30 all year anyway

I would get the one made or offered by Mopar that you linked. Almost every block heater has a temperature setting that prevents them from getting too hot, and keeps the oil and water at just the right temperature. I have a friend who used to live in Alaska and he said that a block heater u there is a must. Plug it into the eletrical outlet and forget it until morning. They are fairly safe and their design does not let them get ungodly hot at all.

No matter where you live if you feel that you need one then I suggest that you get one. Just follow any instructions that come with it to install it and you will be safe.

Also just by heating the oil, the heater will heat the water also through convection. That is simple thermodynamics.
