I have a 2011 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn Ed. I bought it 3 years ago and within a month a had to get the AC recharged. Fast forward 3 more recharges. I would usually get 1 summer out of a charge. I finally convinced the warranty company to replace the evaporator, most of the line set, and the expansion valve. Three days later my warranty expired.

I purchased a new warranty (from the same company) and continued on. 2 weeks later I'm merging onto the highway and boom loss of power and a flashing check engine light. Took it to the dealership and was told my throttle body and injectors needed cleaning while sparkplugs needed replacing. The standard maintenance practices. I agreed and they gave the truck back. I got out and went to merge onto the highway again and bam the same issue. I pulled a U-turn and tried to make it back however this time I went into limp mode I could barely go. They had it a week and they called and said my engine control module was malfunctioning. They replaced that and gave it back to me. I did not even make it out of the parking lot. They tore the engine apart and found the common cam issues that the 5.7 have. I had chewed through number 5 lobe. I got a new cam with lifters. They replaced the head gaskets, valve cover gaskets and the timing chain cover gasket.

I picked it up a week later and went to help a friend move. I get to his house and head inside. When we come back out I have a puddle of oil under my truck. I mean like 20 inches in diameter puddle. I crawl underneath and find the oil filter ready to fall off. I got 3 turns on the filter. I topped off the oil and continued with my day. I did not notice any new oil for roughly 8 hours then the same issue happened again. I drove it straight to the dealership on a Sunday and parked that sucker right at the front door (I was pissed at this point). I get a call on Monday that the new oil filter had a cut o-ring on it...right. anyone else ever find a cut o-ring? They also noticed my crankshaft seal was leaking and that they would fix this free of charge.

I pick it up this past Monday afternoon and drove it home. I get up Tuesday for work and run outside to check the driveway and no oil! Sweet!! I hop in and drive down the street and bam my brake and traction control lights pop on. Then another mile after that the service 4wd light came on.

All of this to say should I sell the thing asap before my warranty deductible nickel and dime's me to death or keep rolling with the punches. My warranty deductible is 250 bucks.

That's lot of issues but for example I pay 700 a month for my truck so is 4 or 5 250 deductibles that bad?

Dam that sucks, but I'd keep it till the warranty runs out. $250 in monthly repairs is a lot less then what you'd pay for a new or almost new RAM.

Also, if you are driving it anything like the pic in your avatar.. just saying lol

It's not. I'm thinking more or less of trying to salvage any trade-in value at this point. Carmax offered me 18k sold. I planned to take that and get into a 2500. I do a decent bit of towing and I'm wondering if that's what is causing these premature failures.

I'd like a 2500 but I tow a trailer that pushes 8k load pretty regularly and no issues so far.

Well if I keep it I will need to change front and rear diff fluids and transfer case fluid. Just a quick study on the forum tells me the electronic gear shifter for 4x4 could be what is causing the service light. It is either that or the computer. If I have 2 bad computers I'm starting to wonder if I need to look at my voltage regulator. On the other hand, I wonder if my ECU was actually bad or if the tech is just poor at diagnosing a cam issue.

It's a crap shoot no matter if you buy new or used as to how long it will go without a minor or major problem happening. You get a good or you get a bad one, or a real "f"n pos from hell.
Imho if you are throwing money at it every two weeks for a major repair, trade it in.
My brother bought a used VW rabbit back in 1980. That pos vw knew when payday was it cost him a lot in repairs in the almost two years he owned it. Turned out it was a recovered flood car someone traded in at the deadealership he purchased it at.

There are certain milestones for resale. 60K, 75K, and 100K. A lot of shoppers simply won't even consider a vehicle over 100K, even if its dead reliable. If Carmax will give you $18K, just keep driving it around and try to sell it yourself for $20K (may not sound like much, but that's two bigscreen TVs). If you don't get any bites, you can still go back to carmax and if its under 100K its unlikely the market value will change much with such advanced mileage/years.

What's frustrating is that I also have a 91 Cherokee. It has an unknown amount of miles. The odometer stopped at 186k. If we assume the 12k miles a year rule that would put me somewhere in the ballpark of 336,000 miles. As far as I know, the engine has never been touched. No burnt smell from the engine oil. Why can' they make engines like that today?

I’m with you. I have a 96 explorer with the 5.0 V8 in it. Have had her since 2007. Odometer didn’t work when I got it and it read 118k. Don’t make them like they used to that’s for sure. Anyways, I think someone else said keep it till the Warranty runs out. I’m with that. $250 a month beats $500-$700 monthly truck payments

Honestly if you want cheap let the warranty play out and buy a low mile 07-13 5.3 Silverado parts are literally a dime a dozen. In fact I just picked up a 07 Tahoe with 70k mi for that exact reason they were like do you want this 3k warranty I was like nope the motor will be good to at least mid to high 200k along with the 4l60 and when it pops I can replace both for the cost of a oem ram headlight lol.

Yea, I would not go with a new truck. I'm thinking of an 03-06 2500. Something I can actually work on. I bought a factory service manual for my ram last week. It came on a CD and it was 17,587 pages...My Cherokee manual is a little over 100. Yes, the Ram manual does cover the 2500 and the 3500 too but still, that is almost 6000 pages per truck. That is ridiculous. Thorough but ridiculous.
