I changed the oil and used a Wix XP filter. Clatter is gone. Same Mobil 1 5w20.

Fram ultra may have the best efficiency on the market that I know about with a good bang for the buck. But the drain back valve sucks especially due to thin base plate which may allow enough distortion when tightened to drain over longer periods of time.

It is the only filter I have experienced start-up noise with. For those who use them with no problems more power to you. But I will never purchase one again.

So, what do you suggest? Royal Purple?

I used the the WIX synthetic and it seemed fine too

I've been running the Wix XP filter for about a week now. I never really paid attention to the oil pressure before now. In drive at idle its at about 34psi and doing 70 on cruise control its at about 51psi. Of course that fluctuates a couple psi as I'm on an incline or decline in the road. Is this normal? Is it a little low? Like I said, I never really paid attention before. The only reason I checked this morning was because there was an awful smell of burned oil as I was going down the road, like it was leaking and burning on the exhaust. So I scanned through the info on the evic and noticed. The smell went away when I got out from behind the f150 and passed him so.....I'll check my truck out when I get off work and there's sunlight out.

Interesting you speak of the demise. It may have just been lucky, but I had a Tundra with the 4.7 V8. it was a 2004. I traded it with 280,000 miles. the last 100-150k the truck chattered form draindown. I didnt know to look at the filter and I used the Fram ones at the time. (Tiny little thing) I did use Lucas in each oil change and this usually stopped it for 5000 miles. when i heard it again, I would change the oil. Anyways, this is good information here. I use the fram ultra now and dont hear this but I do have a manifold leak.

Since filter is orientated vertically, doubt if oil would gravity flow from the filter canister with a leaky anti back flow flapper valve or no anti back flow valve
But
What if the oil "siphoned" out of the filter canister through a leaky anti back flow valve up into engine cavity.
Seems like this event is not always repeatable. Sometimes it does make noise on start up & sometimes not.
Maybe a function of ambient temperature and the rubber flapper seal. The rubber seal may not seal properly at lower temperatures.

The failure of the Challenger space capsule was traced back to a leaky "O" ring based on low ambient temperature at the launch site prior to launch based on analysis from Richard Fineman of Caltech.

There is a demonstration posted on UTube where different motor oil were cooled to minus 40F in their own platic bottles.
The oil bottles were inverted so the oil drained under gravity at 70F ambient into receptor clear glass beakers.
All the oil samples were 10w30
Mobil1 oil drained the fastest.
Royal Purple was second , taking about twice as long as Mobil 1.
Test proved that M1 has greater VI than the other samples and the size of the M1 oil molecules were smaller
and\or more uniform in size than the other samples.
This experimental result maybe the reason why the M1 generates more noise upon start up than some other oils of equal grade.

Noticed the the Lucas Oil synthetic stabilizer additive bottle has some language,
Indicating that it reduces engines noise resulting in use of thinner motor oil.

when I start my truck in the morning, it has a hell of a clatter that lasts for a few seconds. i am using Mobil1 5w20 as called for. I understand the oil drains down to the pan, but damn...how much damage is this doing? Is it the Mobil1? After truck has been on few a few seconds it goes away instantly. i assume the oil has been pumped up to the top of the motor. is anyone else experiencing this?
I know this is old but I had bad noises with 5-20 mobil one will never use it again! oh and just saying... you say using mobil 1 "as called for "mobil 1 oils are not even a approved oil for the rams, it lacks the ms6395 rating required by crysler. Its right there in the manual, the as called for oil according to ram is Pennzoil or shell with the rating.
