so im wondering if the 97 dodge ram 2500 had a low oil pressure "kill" switch? for the 360 v8's. that would cause the truck to not crank with low oil pressure even though its got 5 full quarts of oil.

damn! cause i was driving to work this morning and i was on way to get gas well i felt my truck shutter like bump..bump..bump then the oil light flashed and went away right before i got into the gas station i pulled up to the pump and shut truck off popped the hood and checked the oil. Well oil was between safe and add after three times checking and reading the stick. so i got my gas went to crank the truck the truck wont crank and the oil lights staying on. its getting gas and spark but will not turn over. my dad had told me about vehicles having a low oil pressure kill switch and i was curious to find out if my truck had one. I need to figure it out cause im selling the truck soon so i can get a 02 dodge ram 1500 crew cab 4x4

So it turns over but won't start/run or it will not turn over? Check batt cables, try starting it in N not Park.

When you turn the key on can you hear the fuel pump run at all? It won't for very long but you should hear it. Or you can check fuel psi at the fuel rail, using a test gauge it should be 49 psi.

Oil light will always be on when key is on engine off, cause you don't have any pressure

So it won't crank or won't fire? If it won't crank that sounds like it could be bad news. Usually clank clank clank, oil light, engine won't roll is a bad sequence of events.

Yeah I read that and it was unclear as hell. "You can crank the key and it will try but not do it". Not do which portion, turn over or fire? That's why I asked.

went and picked up the fuel pump tonight. putting it in tomorrow. and ohiogrown what i meant was: you can turn the key like youre cranking the truck but the truck will not start and run. sorry for the confusion. i replaced the oil pump in it today with a high volume pump and did a oil change and all that.

Gotcha. At least the plastic tanks and quick connects on the 2nd gen make swapping the pumps a relatively simple process.

To me thats the best way, done this four or five times in the 19 years I have owned her. Please remember to clean the tank out before you put in the new pump, get all the gas out and wipe the inside of the tank with a lint free rag. Also do not put the last of the gas back in the tank that you take out, just in case it is contaminated.
