I'm going to be shopping for a '13 or '14 truck soon and I'm just curious if anyone has succeeded in making the "sport hood" a functional hood?

I loathe fake hoods... with a passion. I equate it to going to canadian tire and buying peel n stick chrome.

Just seems almost all the trucks I see optioned the way I want, also come with that stupid hood.

You're not the only one that hates that hood, but there's no way to make it functional, unless by functional you mean letting cooler air into the engine bay as well as water, snow, and dust. I've heard of a few people try it with a Vararam with lackluster results at getting seals and decent flow.

There's other threads on here about this. I love the sport hood's look, and also wish it was functional.

Someone on here took one apart to try it and found that there are structural members for the hood running right under the vents that prevent any kind of ducting for intake. Only thing you can do is open them up and let the air, and rain, etc, find its way into the engine bay.

Unless you have a Challenger, you don't have them.

So I guess I am confused then. How did he have the outlets on his sport hood?

Because that was a challenger not a Ram, our hood is different, there's more structure under it and there are no vents. Basically, you can't make a Ram's hood functional.

I had it done. Cause a fake one is cheesy. Doesn't get wet from it.

Yes you can as far as letting airflow in the engine compartment.

Saw it on Gearz. So I said Slave, make it happen! After you trim the vent out, you cut away part of the under-hood structure. It doesn't compromise the hood structure.

Most of you have already seen this, but I came up with this hood cut out. In theory, it would work well with a Vararam.

That actually would look good, and as you said would be functional with a vararam, i dont think it would get too wet inside of there

All depends on your definition of functional ram air hood I guess. Just letting cool air into the engine bay isn't my definition of functional; moving that cool air to the intake location so it can be ingested by the engine is my definition of functional.

I also question the effectiveness of these scoops for letting air into the engine bay given how small they are and their very low profile when you compare it to the very large mouth these trucks have for moving air into the engine bay. A better and much higher volume of cool air can be achieved by removing the lower air dam and pulling the plastic pieces under there to get all that air into the engine bay.

If you just want to say it's functional then you can cut away under the hood, if you actually want it functional then you seriously need to just change the hood for something like an APM or Suncoast.

I'm sure with a little bit of fabrication someone could make it completely functional. You would think by looking at it with the varam it would suck in the cold air coming through the vents. just a guess...
