I've read a lot of posts about cylinder misfires. #5 has been misfiring on my 2015 5.7L for the past two years. Up until the other week, I only got the check engine light when towing my boat. A few days after towing, the light would turn off. It never bogs, shutters, shakes, or anything. I can't tell anything is wrong except for the dummy light coming on. The truck has 110k miles. It developed the tick around 70k miles, but is only there at start-up. After a minute of warm-up or driving a block she's as quiet as a mouse ******* on cotton.

So I took her to my local guy that I trust back in Fall 2018. The shop replaced the coil and plugs. The problem persisted for the next two years but still only when I towed - and only half of the time I tow. A few weeks ago, I plugged a string of holiday lights into the interior outlet and the misfire code got thrown. I took it back to my shop. On his nickel, he replaced the #5 coil and plugs again plus threw in a chemical oil change. This past weekend the light came on while on a long (500 mile) trip. Misfire on #5 again.

It sounds like I am looking at a cam/lifter and possible valve spring replacement based on all of the other threads. The only question that I have is whether the lack of any perceptible bogging/shaking/ticking would lead to a different problem?

The shop is ready to pop the valve cover and check the lifters, but I wanted to do some reconnaissance first. You guys are awesome.
