Okay guys, so heres the deal. I can feel the stock 5.7 starting to go a little bit so its time to start saving. Question is, what do i get?
This would be for my 04 2500HD QCLB 5.7. I have a choice between the 5.7, 6.1, and 6.4, obviously, but its what motor with give me the best bang for the buck overall that i want. My mechanic specializes in high output race motors so anything thats possible can be done by this guy. Hes saying it could be a sleeper 5.7 stroked and bored with a low boost procharger, a 6.1 procharged, or 6.4 procharged. All these will be with a 4.56 rear in a truck that will eventually have a 3" carli suspension system and 35" tires. I want this thing to put a stupid time up on the track, but perform as a DD. It all comes down to what is worth it for the whole all-rounder.

Side note: i know quite well that its a truck and itll have a massive engine and weighs over 3 tons, but ass a DD, MPGs do play a factor. Problem is sometimes these things need more power to get better fuel economy. To anyone with experience with these motors similar to my purpose: this is where i need your opinions.

Thanks all

The problem with building a 2500 is that we're pretty much stuck with shorty headers. You could check with your builder or with the vendors here to see if there are any other options but if you're limited to shorties then at some point adding more cubic inches might not make sense. Maybe reuse your 5.7L block and do a 392 stroker with a cam, ported heads and torque converter?

The tranny was just done and beefed up and with the larger TC so itll withstand a good amount of power. Id have to go shorties no matter what. Either that or $2000 edelbrock or american racing (i dont remember which) long tubes which is absolutely rediculous

If you're thinking about boost then I'd stick to a 5.7L based 370 stroker. I say that because it'll give you a shorter stroke so it can rev higher compared to a 392 stroker kit and a higher rpm is better with a blower, you'll also have more block thickness and less piston rock.

Id like to run boosted because a boosted motor, under normal driving conditions, can actually provide better mpg so that should help out with the possible loss of doing a stroker

hahahaha, building a boosted engine for MPG improvement. I thought the same thing when I first built mine when I was originally getting 550-600km/tank ... and now I'm loving every km of my 450km/tank.

Its like running the ac when just cruisin. When you boost it dumps fuel. Not to mention having to run 93 octane fuel. Full synthetic motor oil to keep it cool. Dont get me wrong...Its fun but it has a cost!

Im not boosting for mpg gains at all. Im boosting for torque and ponies lol. Im just saying a smaller boosted should do better than a larger natural aspiration

I use my truck everyday too. Getting 10.3 miles per gallon around town with 3.92 gears.
A forged 5.7 will take 6psi of boost and last pretty well if tuned right.
6.4 cylinder walls are a bit thin for boost from what i understand

Thats not bad at all. Ive been leaning towards the 5.7 because the guy has em lyin around with less than 10000 on em that he can give to me. I know 4.56s are gonna help bring the power band lower while the supercharger adds more power on the top. 4.56s have also proven to be better around town, atleast on naturally aspirated engines
