I must say that the response from Morimoto was disgusting. “Yes our lights suck, but we aren’t going to replace them because those replacement lights will suck too!”
I hope it doesn’t happen To all of the 1000’s of sets that are out there
#meltimoto

I do. Because the problems with these lights have been derailed and pushed to the bottom of every thread because people are more obsessed with the DRLs.

Hey guys - a great customer of mine pinged me about this thread today, wanted to drop in and address the issue.

This is most definitely something attributed to light reflected by the sun, not a side effect of overheating LED projectors (their heat sinks are all the way in the back of the light, far from the trim cover up front)

We have reported this issue to the factory engineers and are working together to evaluate
A) whether or not its something preventable and
B) What we can do for customers if so.

I will however point out that this is not really something that only affects these lights...it's pretty common for most any projector-based headlight. When sun comes through the top of the lens and refracts back onto some surrounding surface inside a headlight housing (like a magnifying glass onto an ant) - it happens.

I've attached a few random examples of this, ironically both on $400K+ cars on their factory headlights.

We care about our customers and we want them to be happy with the product, once we have some more clear answers on just what can be done - we'll address complaints 1:1 then. At this time, indeed it doesn't make sense to swap a headlight out under warranty though since, without changing anything about them - the same issue could happen again. Until then though, we would appreciate your understanding that the headlights themselves aren't self destructing, nor is this a problem that only affects these lights in particular.

I would now expect your customer base and BBB rating to drop. With you now knowing these units have a known issue having been supported by multiple claims from customers, a buyback should be offered.

4 months in on mine, and so far showing no signs of melt. We just came out of one of the hottest summers on record and just recently had a 30 day stretch with no rain , very uncommon for this area. I will keep a close eye on 'em though. As far as the sun goes, remember when the OEM all black projectors were doing the same, they changed the projector shrouds to chrome.

I have the exact same markings on my passenger side

It's ********. 1400 lights and this is what you get

I know... I had to get that one replaced because of wires hanging down in front of the projector and now I noticed those markings. Aaaand my drivers side isn’t level. It flares up on the ditch side

I have it on my passenger side too. It is on the black part, looks like the paint melted

Lmao... what a disaster. I knew to stay far far away from these headlights. I will say, I do want to get a set of the infinity lens tail lights by Morimoto. They look super nice and I haven’t really heard anything bad about them yet.

Exactly!

I mean this is a ****storm, don’t get me wrong.

BUT...

Mopar/Ram releases the All Black OEM Projectors (black projector shroud version) for the 2013+ Rams and they melted the inner bezel and Ram had to issue a recall and remove all of them from the market and from already sold vehicles. They are now considered a rare find. They were replaced with the “All Black” version 2.0 which now has a chrome bezel around the projector as chrome will not melt as easily and will just deflect the sunlight instead of absorbing it.

It seems Morimoto needs to ditch the all black bezel and paint the shroud area chrome, if customers don’t want chrome bezel replacements, then deal with your burnt lights or get a refund.

But they definitely need to do something and people need to understand this is VERY VERY common, Ram/Chrysler had this happen to a few different model lights and had to issue a recall. Also, Jeremy over at RetroShop no longer offers painted shrouds on the OEM Ram projectors and km sure other makes and models as well. He will not modify the inner part of the bezel and leaves it chrome so that the sunlight doesn’t melt the bezel.

This is a major issue with headlights they are black plastic inside.

something that hasn't been discussed

the company aknowleges there is a problem and engineers are looking into it

The main question is

"WHY ARE THEY STILL BEING SOLD?"

what does this say about the company's ethics?

No way lol I constantly browse these forums and I’ve seen literally thousands of replies/posts about the headlights and the 10+ different issues, between melting shrouds, broken adjusters, broken projectors flopping around inside the housing.... I’ve only seen that one thread linked above about the tail lights. I find it very hard to believe that the tail lights are failing more than the headlights.

Anyways, I build lights for a living so I might order a set and if there is issues I can fix them. I have AlphaOBD as well so I’m not worried about the reverse light not working like most people had, as it seems AlphaOBD will fix that issue.

Of course, that is IF I order them, which I haven’t decided on yet.

# of threads != failure rate

I’ve heard taillights are a nightmare

Lol well I mean it’s not too far off from the truth. I look at it this way. If someone is dropping $1400 on headlights and almost $500 on tail lights for their Ram, chances are they are going to be on some sort of online forum or group to research them first, most people don’t spend $2,000 without double checking on a product. So, my theory is that a good 75%-80% of Morimoto Ram XB Lightning customers are in these forums, or Facebook groups.

And I honestly haven’t heard much bad about the tail lights but everywhere I go that is ram related, it’s just endless crap and mayhem about the headlights.

I’m so glad I canceled my order way back when. Sorry to see you guys that bought them have these issues. Hopefully you can get your money back, by a lawsuit. I think The RetroFit Source is a horrible company. Especially not warrantying a product and blaming it on “sun damage” what are they going to say when your truck catches fire. “ sorry you might of hooked them up wrong. Even tho they are plug and play”.

It seems what was meant to be a constructive response earlier this week only stirred the pot further with a handful of guys here.

Nobody is (or was) denying that these lights ever had a problem. The worst one of which was by far the broken ball joint adjusters - but the the ball joint was been completely revised earlier this summer and is no longer an issue. TRS replaced every one of them for every customer who had the issue, no questions asked and paid for all of the shipping costs to & from our customers to take care of it. That's not what a hero does...It's just exactly what a responsible company who cares about their customers should do, really.

That said, much like taking care of customers who had adjusters break in shipping, I am fully confident that we'll be able to take care of customers whose lights are marred by the sun - and would simply advise those of you with the problem to reach out to us directly. If you bought the lights from TRS, we will take care of you!

Thanks again guys

The price of $1,300.00 dollars was really hard to swallow, but these are my 3rd set of headlights and will dam well be my last.
They are everything morimoto said they would be and more, incredibly bright and clean looking, the high beams are outstanding, and the blinkers are to die for. most people would not invest that kind of money, but i'm pretty much going all out on this truck.IMG_20190628_203515.jpg IMG_20190701_134230.jpg IMG_20190710_060629.jpg IMG_20190710_061351.jpg

Thank you! The lights do look awesome, they perform very well, the fit and finish is perfect, and (I know Im going to get some **** for this one) but there is simply no comparison OEM or aftermarket to their DRLs and turn signals. Few design quirks that Morimoto is/has worked out, but all in all, a great product thats continually being improved

I bought a set of open box headlights at a discount and one of them had the burn spot, right under the outermost lens. These had the matte paint on the interior.

I'm in the process of repainting both headlights with a mix of chrome (for the for the edges) and high heat paint to replace the matte interior. After baking open the headlights, it doesn't seem like the LED heatsinks were the cause since they're a good distance from the front half of the headlights and it's possible that the LEDs themselves could be the culprit based on the convexity of the bulbs, but then it should have also melted the gloss black portion of the LED cavities as they are also painted (I found out after accidentally ruining the finish with acetone).

So likely it's sun related and hopefully my solution would help eliminate the burn spots. I'll keep y'all updated on how this goes.

Your backpeddeling now that a fuss as been thrown and the ram community has been made aware of your initial response. So if your not denying the lights have problems, then maybe you need to have your engineering team do some real world f#$king testing for months before releasing and selling a $1400 product. Let's cut the **** here.

You should of done the chrome bezel right from the get go and have the projectors set back furthur into the housing like OEM ones are.

The fancy DRL and sequential signals are a moote point if the overall product is trash.

That type of business practice is a fast, one way street to ******* alot of customers off and fking your reputation and product. Remember, in today's world of social media, you can only screw so many over before the end users report the BS
