I just bought some castrol by the gallon and it's 10-30w. The engine says to use 5-20W. Hummmmm. I'm in a warmer climate, Solcal, and think it should not make any diff. but someone says the motor/computer may be affected?
Should I worry about this or not? I already did the oil change yesterday. I've never heard of motors being so picky.

If you have a Hemi, I believe you should ONLY use 5W20...MDS engines are kind of picky when it comes to that. That's the reason they use 5W20

if it were me, I wouldn't use it. The first number isn't too bad since its cold viscosity. But 30 is heavier than 20 and I'd be worried it wouldn't lube tight tolerance areas as well as 20.

Only have to worry about last number. In warmer climate stick with 5W-20 in colder 0W-20 is better. I would not use anything but one of these in MDS HEMI.

I haven't gone anywhere yet with it. I guess I will drain it and get the 5-20. What the heck is MDS? Yes, I have the Hemi.

It is the system that shuts half the cylinders down when load is less allowing for improved fuel economy. It only works correctly with with 20 oil. 0W-20 or 5W-20 I am sure if they made it 10W-20 too although I have never seen that weight.

Not meaning to Jack thr OP's thread but i have a 2500 Hemi without the MDS
Living in Galveston county where it gets in the 100's during the summer would the 5-30 be a better choice for me or should i stick with the 5-20 oils
20 wt just seem awful thin to me .
My Wife's 2012 Passat uses 5w-30 & recommend oil change is 1 yr or 10,000 miles on the synthetic?
Thanks in advance

I would still stick with 20 as that is what it was designed for.

It doesn't matter if you live in Alaska, or southern Arizona...follow the manual! The ultimate decision of course is up to you. If something does happen (probably won't), good luck with a warranty claim.
