I have always run 50w HIDs in my OEM projector headlights and Ive always had a 35w HID kit in my OEM vertical Fog lights. I was never impressed with either to say the least but less impressed with the FOG lights which are very bright/glare but don't really put out that much light. So I decided to retrofit my own HID projectors in my fog lights.

For the sake of these pics I was running a 5500K 9012 morimoto XB35 bulb, 50w Morimoto elite ballots. In the Fogs I have a 5K H1 bulb in the projector and a 6K 9006 in the OEM Fog light.

All in all it wasn't too bad and the output is noticeable but I wish it fit under the lense without heavy mods. This is where a matchbox style projector would fit without issue but would suffer in the lighting output. I accomplished these things.

1.) No more glare!
2.) increased distance light output
3.) blacked out housings
4.) replaced my ****** up fog light that the dealer has yet to get a replacement in 3 months.
5.) Functional HI beams in the fogs as well for even more light when brights are applied.
6.) since I didn't modify the bulb mounting in the housing i can use a 9006 bulb and go back to stock, the plasti dip will allow me to peel it off and the shinny chrome will be untouched. Only issue is the molded lense cover but it won't affect light output.

So my parts list:

1.) pair of H1 mini bixenon projectors with shrouds (cheap off brand)
2.) Pair of TYC/aftermarket OEM fog light housings ($40 each, still waiting on driver side)
3.) H1 5000K DDM 35w Bulbs and reused the DDM digital slim 35w ballasts
4.) Black plasti Dip and glossifyer (so it can be peeled and used like OEM)
5.) 9006/9005 High beam splitters (Cheap ebay)
6.) 9006 to female bixenon projector adapters (Cheap ebay)
7.) 9006 wire extension that I have a ton of when I buy a set of HID bulbs 12"
8.) Heat gun, some screw drivers, and some patience!

I would say in all It took me 30 min to open the fog light, and prob 1 hr to plasti dip and clear the housing and retro fit the projector into the housing. Takes all of 3 min to swap out the housings on the truck.

Anyways here are the pics! I got some better output shots but when I got home my cell phone memory card has an error on like 30 pics so they are corrupted and a waste.

Even though the lense is heated and molded you can't really tell bc of how much the bumper actually blocks and how far behind it is mounted.

This is a comparison shot of the XB 35 5500 HID bulb BOTTOM (a high output, high quality HID bulb in the OEM housing vs the cheap H1 5K bulb in the retrofitted housing TOP) This was like 6ft away and the cutoff is funky till u get farther away just like all HID projectors.

Holy Glare batman! This is why I sometimes get flashed.
2015-07-25%2020.32.55_zpsssg2xlk8.jpg

THis is FOGS only! about 25 - 35ft away. The right is the projector clearly, and the left is the OEM reflector housing. Most of the light on the left side is still the sharp side cutoff light from the wide beam of the projector on the right side.
2015-07-25%2021.46.59_zpsggefvpgx.jpg

Same thing but on the OEM reflector side, you can see the light output is very minimal 30ft out roughly. And Idk about you guys but I can't see the first 10 - 15ft in front of my truck bc of its size and height, so all that light is lost and useless.
2015-07-25%2021.47.10_zpsavl8qmyj.jpg

This is me standing 20ft out in front, shows you the lighting pattern (foreground light) right at the front of the truck. The area you can't see and where the OEM lights throw the most light. Ive noticed also that they throw a lot of light to the side of the truck vs in front. You can also see all the glare from the OEM reflector housing.
2015-07-25%2021.47.20_zpsrwk56qpo.jpg

Same but like 30ft, LOTS OF GLARE from the OEM setup/

Got the Depo replacement drivers side light in today. This one was MUCH easier to open. THis time I tried an oven at 250*F for 11 min, and got it pretty open after a min of prying, then put it back in for 5 min and it opened right up. Anyone planning to do this Mod its better to go cheap as they are easier to open up. THe quality differences between the TYC and the DEPO are negligible. Both are made in Taiwan and both come with brand new 9006 bulbs. The side markings of the DEPO (casted grid into side of plastic light) matches that of the OEM fog, TYC does say TYC on the lense top and the outer surface of the reflector bowl is a different texture. OTher than that they seems to be the same not to mention easier to open! So now for the goodies.

I wasn't able to get any real output shots but I WILL! Need to get away from the wife at night to get them lol.

Got it open, plasti dip and glossier the inside like the pass side. Here you can see the amount of the shroud and lense that protrudes past the lense surface.

Another pic
2015-07-31%2021.00.33_zpsa6dfzah2.jpg

The back of the DEPO lense had a different vent/seal. ITs the exact same as the rear seals on the back of the OEM projector headlights. I wasn't expecting this as the TYC had a rubber 90* boot with no vent filter… I poked a hole and pushed the solenoid wires through and called it a day.
2015-07-31%2021.00.52_zpscdwuqeu4.jpg

Here is a side shot of after I formed the outer lense to fit the projector… its not a whole lot but it won't fit without it lol. This makes the D2S look better in my eyes since they are about 1/2" shorter which would barely clear. But would need massive opening at the back of the housing. Or drop in some Matchboxes and call it a day. You just won't get as much light output compared to the H1 Mini.
2015-07-31%2021.31.04_zpsdp2uovlc.jpg

fogs only. The do a great job of lighting up all by themselves. No real need for the non crisp OEM projector headlights lol.
2015-07-31%2022.15.19_zpsgzkgs3o3.jpg

Here is the same pic with the headlights now on. These are OEM projector headlights with 5500K Morimoto XB35 bulbs about 10hrs on them and 50w morimoto elite ballasts and morimoto ram specific low beam harness.
2015-07-31%2022.16.57_zps22gbo6wy.jpg

Oh yea baby. THe new fogs make the truck look so much more intimidating! Bc its all blacked out the fogs sorta disappear vs the GIANT chrome housings that stick out like a soar thumb!

Pulling back in the driveway against a neighbors house you can see the shark colorful cutoff/step of the new driver side projector fog. I would say that wall is 30-40ft away. Just shows how sharp the light cutoff is and how far is being projected.
2015-07-31%2022.22.30_zpsle9yosox.jpg

Here are the fog cutoffs against the road, my driveway is rather steep incline and I'm backed in. But they are aligned and it looks stretched but its bc of the angle of the truck and of the curved road surface.
2015-07-31%2022.23.32_zpsjipichiv.jpg

Same shot but fogs off and just headlights.

I hope everyone enjoyed! If you can't do it yourself the mod is totally worth it even if you have Jeremy do it at retroshop.

Great post blackbetty Looks great.
I have the 14 'tradesman' and I don't know why Mopar doesn't have an option to upgrade/add fogs. I want to get the interior switch/button.

Thanks guys, yes it does give more usable light!! During my first night drive/testing I drove on some dark roads for aiming with just the fogs and honestly I could see everything and didn't really need the headlights. I didn't even get flashed! Plus bc its lower to the ground its more "prius" friendly lol. Kinda bummed I can't use them till i get the other side done lol and I might step up to some 6K since Im not really a fan of the yellow 4500/5k. Once I get the other fog light I'll be doing the other side.

I would love to do the FXR swap in my headlights but I'm not brave enough to try to open a $600 headlight lol.

you can always add them! Thats why its great how cheap things have gotten in the world of HID and projectors. Ive had my eye on these billet shrouds/mounts that encase a whole Mini H1 bixenon projector and allow you to easily mount it and keep it water tight. If I had some flat open space Id just drill a 3" hole and mount the guy lol.

Nice upgrade.

Do the fog light housings come out fairly easy or did you have to remove the bumper?

I want to upgrade my fogs but I think I have to remove the bumper cover. Fml.

Literally takes 2 min to take one out. Three 10mm bolts from the backside behind the bumper. I just slide under and unscrew and it comes right out. Super easy.

For those of you wanted to retro it... getting the lense open is going to be fun lol.. but you can do the H1 mini which requires no mods to the back of the housing but its too tall... hence why I heated and molded the lense to it. Or you could do a matchbox mini projector... which drops right in. Or you could go a mini D2S projector which is 1/2" shorter than the mini H1 but the back of the housing will need to be drilled out ALOT to fit the massive bulb holder of the D2S. The Mini H1 is about 1/2" to tall to fit under the stock lense without modding the back of the housing.

So after searchin around....For the 12' sport or express model, the whole grill, bumper has to come off before you can access/remove fog light assembly.

So again...fml

Lol

Maybe I just need a new truck.

So your saying a matchbox Mimi projector would fit the best and probably easiest to do?

Yes, matchbox will drop right in without modifying the housing by cutting out the back or molding the front to fit. It's a much smaller projector so it fits. But due to the smaller size u don't get as much light output etc of the larger projectors and ur limited to 35w hid. The new mini H1 7.0 morimoto is designed for 35 and 50w HIDs.

Yah I like the idea of it fitting nicely especially since it would be my first retrofit. I think I'll do that and grab a 35 Watt hid kit
