I have a 99 2500 sport 4x4 that has awful rush in the frame around the steering gear box area. What would yall recommend doing to fix this I thought of plating both side with 1/4" steel but im leary on trusting this on the road or in the mud. Thanks for your input

Never done this on my dodge, but my old 88 Suburban had some real bad rust where the steering box mounted. So I cut off the old mount and welded new 1/4in steel plate in, then stabilized it by welding little 1.5x1.5 square 1/4 plate on each of the corners of my new mount. Thing was solid as a rock. As long as you clean the rust off where you are going to weld, and are good at welding, I see no problem.

If you want it to last, sandblast everything, cut the affected area out, weld new in, por15 all that ****

likely junk. If that spot is that bad, you need to ask what you can't see, as well as other places on the frame. That's probably the worst place to have that happen too. Gonna be a serious amount of work to fix correctly. Take a good look at the rest of your frame, and see if it's worth repairing that section, swapping frames, or putting your good parts into a different truck.

That is the only spot on the frame with any rust

If so, then it's probably worth repairing that section. Thought about splicing in a donor section rather than bandaging that one?

Yes I have a donor section but not sure as to how far back I need to take it back because of the wheel components and all of that my donor section was cut right under the cab

Yeah, that's gonna be the $64,000 question,... hopefully not literally

The hardest part will be keeping it straight (or at least the same straightness as the existing portion). Gonna be major surgery.
