I imagine this subject has been beat to death but i am not finding the answers i need. I have a 2021 ram rebel 1500 5.7L hemi. It is time for the 15000 mile oil change. The 5000 and 10000 were dealer done. I am sick of dealing with them. I need to do this next one myself. The manual with my truck is so blasted vague on most everything that i have turned here to get answers. I prefer full synthetic oil and a good filter for doing this work. I am looking for advice on what synthetic oil is approvded by ram for use in this engine to not void warranty. and a good filter. I have always used Mobile1 in everything i own but in doing a little research i find mobile1 is not on the approved Ram listing for this truck.

Any help is appreciated.

As far as Ram, it would be Mopar, Pennzoil that I know for sure. Those two are what my dealership stocks and there may be others. I have always used Pennzoil and Fram. Filter wise, again Mopar, Fram Ultra and any of the high end filters. I know a lot of people use Redline as well.

If you really want to get into the weeds on this, do a search for Synthetic Oil and see how much information is here on the Forum.

Stick to the classic 3000 mile oil changes with Penzoil full synthetic. Modern oil is a wonderful thing but think about it this way. Oil does 2 things, catches dirt and cleans the engine. (yeah i know it does other stuff too but keeping it simple). So if 3000 miles of dirt was enough to warrant a change at your given volume of oil and 3000 miles exhausted the cleaning properties of all synthetic and conventional oils with the previos standard, what changed with cars that made this 5000 miles? Nothing. Engines are only getting more complex and being built to tighter spec, so it makes no sense that the same oil with a more complex engine would perform better. By all logic it should perform the same if not worse.

With a full synthetic oil anything less then 7500 miles on an oil change is a waste of money unless you have high idle times. There are droves of fleet vehicles that use bulk oil, go the full 10K OCI, ran hard and put on over triple the miles most ever drive a vehicle without failures.
You listed what's changed with engines, they're built tighter and run cleaner.

Very true statements up there...

Company I work for, use to have fleet of Ram Trucks (we still have dodge vans, few hundred of them)
We never had as many of large companies, only few hundred trucks, mix of 1500, 2500, 3500.
Not going claim they were all prefect, cause they weren't. But issues were relatively small.
Before we switched to Ford (only cause Ford gave us really low price) most of the trucks had min of 300k-500K
People driving them? They were crazy...
Oil was no-name barrels... Those trucks were lucky if they changed oil @ 10K miles, usually it was 15K.
Often, they would run low. So they take half old oil and half new, put it back in truck. Not even bother with changing filter.

Sucks to be people who purchased those trucks when they went to auction.

Your owners manual specifies/recommends specific requirements for the oil. Open your hood and the oil cap will tell the weight of the oil to use. I run penzoil ultra platinum with a fram ultra filter. My OCI is 6000 miles. You find the synthetic oil thread and read up on what other guys are doing and why.

I recently bought a 2019 Bighorn 5.7 from a local dealer. I asked them what oil they put in when they changed it….they said ,”whatever is in the big drum”…everyone gets the same stuff!!

So, after 900 miles I opted to change the oil and filter. I used 5w20 valvoline full synthetic and a royal purple filter. Occasionally, I’d get lifter ticking when re-starting it after it was warmed up. Only lasted a couple of seconds.

Next oil change I used royal purple 5w30 based on a recommendation of my son who used to sell Chrysler vehicles. It does meet the MS6395 Chrysler spec. In 2500 miles, there has been no ticking at all. The MDS works the same, mpg is the same, and the oil pressure is the same at 48-49 psi on the hiway but went from 24 to 28 psi at idle when warm.

Lubrizol sells additives to way more than Redline. Well, at least they used to before their fires, plant shut downs etc.

Blackstone lab reports are pretty clear on what oil is best for the HEMIs. Opinions dont matter just facts !
