I am looking at purchasing a 2018 ram 1500 quad cab 4wd. Would be my first. Right now I have an older Chevy 5.7L.
Am a retired guy who loves to fish. I pull a 17.5ft aluminum bass boat around our state.
Am torn on the V6 and based research the engine appears to have less issues.
I Like the gas mileage however I cannot seem to get a good sense of towing capacity. One says 4400 lbs another 7700 lbs. I would appreciate comments and experiences from you all on towing and reliability. The internet has way too much info and it's very confusing. Thanks

I cant speak for the v6 but as a 5.7 owner with 3.55 axle that pulls an 18ft boat i can say it does good but i wouldn't want to go smaller.

The V6 with 3.55 gears is 7440, 3.21 gears is the 4400.
The 3.55 gears should handle that boat easily with the 8sp transmission.

BriamH is right on the money. I have pulled a car trailer (open type) with a 5,000# GMC van on it, up and down hills returning from Yosemite Park, lots of climbing with my 2019 4X4 1500 V6 with the 3.55 gears. No issues whatsoever---plenty of hills to climb, it's not all downhill.
Personally, with the 8-speed trans which reportedly has a 4.71 first gear, I can't fathom why such a small difference in rear-end gears would actually matter. It's like an old 4-speed auto with 2 extra low gears in front and 2 long overdrive gears at the top end. 305 hp is nice too.

That is the only thing I would change and that is to go to 3.55 gears with limited slip.
