Hello experts! I've been looking through many threads vendor site to try to learn about exhaust systems. I understand most of it, but I get confused when people start using terms like muffler delete and stuff like that.

My question is what are the major parts to an exhaust?

If I wanted to start from the headers and end at the tips, what would I need to replace in order to have gains, but stay legal?

I ask because I understand what headers are, I understand (sort of) cat-backs, and mufflers. I don't understand if a cat-back system add or subtracts a muffler, or a resonator, or if it includes all of that, or if that stuff is necessary.

If I was start modding my exhaust, I'd like to keep a moderate tone with as little drone as possible. Hopefully, I'm not asking a loaded question that can not be so easily answered.

I have JBA shorty headers and that exhaust. All bolt-on parts

The longtube experts will have to give you more info on those

It would bolt up behind the cats hence the name catback.Exhaust components in order headers, cats, resonator, muffler, and maybe another resonator depending on model.

Sorry, I might have made it confusing...

Are you thinking of shorty headers or longtubes?

The shorties and MF exhaust will work together and both are bolt on parts. No modifications needed.

Here's a basic diagram of the ram exhaust. A cat back will replace all piping from the muffler back. If you wanted to add headers jba shorty will replace the manifold only. Lt headers you will have to move the cats back and change some of the piping before the muffler. If I'm wrong some one will add to this I'm sure.

in my opinion a cat back system is a waste of money, all it really replaces is the muffler everything else is the same as factory which is what makes it bolt on (some people prefer bolt on) what i did is paid $100 ish for a magnaflow muffler and had a local shop weld it to the stock exhaust for $60 so I have $160 into it compared to the 600-800 for a cat back system. I'm not trying to cause trouble with people who like the entire cat back system because i did the same thing with my avenger but I'm really happy with the money i saved by just replacing the muffler

I had custom duals done from the cats to a DI/DO 18" Magnaflow. Kept the stock pipes from the muffler back. Sounds awesome. A little drone at 50mph but who drives 50? Lol.
