Hi all,

I have a new 2016 Bighorn Crewcab 4x4 with a 5.7L Hemi. This is my first Ram truck. I've put about 800 gentle miles on it. Thanks to the forum I have a S&B CAI & Moe's Billet Oil Catch Can on the way :)

The manual says to change the oil based on the life indicator. Interested in your thoughts and experience on when to do the 1st oil change.

Cheers
Brian

Change to synthetic oil, I always go by the life monitor. I use signature series Amsoil and always get about 10,000 kms between oil changes

I'd do first at 5000 and switch to synthetic. That's what I just did in my 15

What about using Lucas Oil Stabilizer in the 5.7 with each Oil change? I use it in my Kenworth with a Caterpillar engine & love it.

I did mine at 2500. Went with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. Ran that to 7500 and switched to Amsoil. Also, a good synthetic media filter will do you good. Fram Ultra is a great choice at a reasonable cost.

It is an oil thickener that dilutes your additive package, you really don't want to use this. All you are doing is putting a thick mineral oil when you do this. You would be better using the next oil weight up and leaving that stuff alone.

I drove an International for 9 years all Cummmined out as well. You don't want any additives except a sulfur one or appropriate freeze additives so you don't gel up in the diesel. With a bypass filter on that you can go 50k easily before changing your oil, but not if you dilute it.

I changed the fist time at 2200. I went with Pennzoil platinum. Now I change around 8500. I use a band filter wrench and get to the filter from the front of the truck. I use a 2 liter soda bottle with the top cut off to go around the filter to keep oil off the frame. Now I use a fram ultra synthetic filter.
