got out of my truck this afternoon to find grease slung all over my passenger side wheel well, after some wiping and inspection i found the outter cv boot torn apart in a few places, (im guessing it was from burring the truck in sand and gravel last month.) Grease smelt burnt so i figured a new half assembly would be the best idea. (i also inspected the other side JIC and found nothing)
any way, auto zone was 64.95 with a $35 core for the old.
quick write up
Basic hand tools, axle nut socket, wd-40, auto zone pitman arm puller for balljoints.
hanes manual says you need a puller to brake the c clip holding the axle on you dont
put front of truck on jack stands
remove tire, brake caliper and bracket
remove axle nut (wd40 is you friend)
support the lower a-arm with jack so it dont scare the **** out of you for the next steps
remove lower shock bolt, upper sway bar bolt,
use pitman arm puller for upper ball joint and tie rod,
now that the shock isnt holdn the a arm up lower the jack the additional 3 inches you need to wrestle the shaft out.
now the fun part, pull the spindle towards the back of the truck and push the shaft as far into the truck as you can, and being carefull not to rip the abs wire out, pull the outer end of the axl out of the wheel hub,
this is where you need the (axle puller).....have a buddy pull on the shaft and tap the back with a hammer to break the c clip loose inside the cv shaft ........3 light taps and it popped rite out
grease up the new one and repeat the process, in reverse.
not the best write up but i tried. took 3 hours with 2 autozone runs, lunch break, and a beer run.
