Just bought my 2019 Ram 1500 (5.7L) 4WD, and am coming up on it's first oil change. I was wondering if it would be better for longevity to go with a full synthetic oil over the dealer recommended semi-synthetic?

I traded in a 2004 GMC because I'm doing more light towing with a new camper trailer and wanted the added torque without switching to diesel. I'm a little out of date on all the newer options and I would like this Ram to last at least 15 years.

I go with what ever the dealer uses. If it's good enough for Dodge it's good enough for me

i am always tempted to switch to another oil. i am always cautious given the price of a new engine if damaged somehow by me not using the dealer stipulated oil. if the oil THEY recommend kills my engine, its on them. not me.

IMG_0704.JPG :welcome: I like to wait for engine break-in before switching from conventional engine oil to synthetic engine oil. I usually give it 15,000 miles, then switch to a high quality synthetic engine oil along with a very good synthetic media engine oil filter.

I run AMSOIL 5W30XL full synthetic engine oil, and the Mobil 1 Extended Performance engine oil filter, with oil and filter replaced every 5,000 miles.

Welcome to the RAM clan Fjold!
You couldn't have found a better bunch of guys or a better forum to find info and suggestions. I too run dealer oil, though mine is full synthetic in the 6.4.
Drop by often and there is also a Senior Citizens thread if you care to drop by there as well. Good choice and luck with the new ride!

Thanks for the welcome all, I know that I'll have more questions as I find more maintenance items that I'll want to handle myself.

:welcome:to the Forum!

In my Ram I run Mobil 1 5w-30 Full Synthetic Extended Protection High Mileage Formula, and NAPA Gold Filter (same exact filter as WIX). I too change my oil at 5k.
