New motor or sell as is??

2011 2500 5.7 hemi. 160kmi. Motor is blown. Otherwise in decent shape with a new transmission last year. Quoted $12-15k for full oem motor replacement. Trying to gauge my options of bite off the replacement and sell or just sell as-is to someone who’s able to do the work themselves. Looking for y’all’s expert opinions. Thank you!

Did you have a mechanic/tech look at the engine? What specifically did they say happened?

Weather replacement fits your situation is kind of personal choice which to a certain point comes down to personal factors that only you know.

Have you been entertaining the idea of upgrading to a newer pickup? Or would you have kept it a long time if the motor had not 'blown'? Maybe it's worth making a few phone calls and get a couple more engine-replacement prices.

Yep This ^^^

A used vehicle is commonly priced with a mid-life engine…not a New one. You’ll never come out ahead buying someone Else a new engine.

Find a reasonable replacement engine…and get a quote for installation…and price the truck accordingly.

I just wonder if it is worth the hassle. What level trim is your truck? Go in a site like KBB and price it out at poor condition then fair for comparison before and after. I don't think you will get your money back, and what if it doesn't run right after? Too many unknowns, just drag it in to a dealer and take the wholesale trade in value is my vote. But I just don't have much appetite for used parts, never have good luck. Good luck.

Maybe he doesnt want payments? who would? the new rams are not to great in my opinion unless you find one with a hemi even then over priced. If his truck is average condition some rot on rockers ect bad motor its worth $1500-2k with a Good running engine around 8k.

I would look at the factors here. If the rest of the truck is in good shape. I would drop an engine in it. But I can also build my own engines. Plus I would upgrade it while I am building it. Unless you can get a something better for a minimum cash difference of your current situation is the only way I would get something else. One last thing I am all about living debt free , so I would NOT get in a hurry.

If you get a reputable replacement engine, you may be a lot better off than some of the new trucks and their AFM/DFM fiascos. When the engine in my '08 goes, that's the route I'm looking at. Hopefully it wont be for a long time.

Power train products has long blocks for about 4200. They offer 7yr million mile warranty. Im not sure of cost for that or if it’s included. You may find a reasonable shop that can swap it for a couple g’s. When mine goes thats probably where I’ll get mine. I’ve not used them. But I’ve been stocking em for about 10yrs. lol. But my 5.7 keeps on trucking. I like the newer trucks. But can’t bring myself to pay 60-80k for a truck that might need a an engine or trans. At less than 300k miles. (Call spoiled or cray cray). I’ll keep my old stuff going and save 40k for better things.
