I have a 2017 RAM 1500. At 172K miles, it just started the lifter tick and it sounds pretty bad. My local shops don't want to touch it for cam/lifter replacement - they all say just get a new motor. 8-10k is their estimate.
I really like the truck - it's clean, full of options I like (rambox, air suspension, etc...) and rides nice. It's my daily driver and I pull a trailer every once in a while. So, I'm thinking of just buying a new motor and doing the swap in my garage with my nephew (he is a mechanic) and he's willing to do most the work for under 1k over a weekend or two.
I've heard Jasper is hit or miss on their remans but I've never bought a crate engine before, so I'm looking for recommendations.
Also - any "must have" add-ons? Stainless headers? Not planning on deleting the mds unless there is an overwhelming response to do so. I'm very happy with the performance of the oem motor with no mods. I was hoping to get over 200k before having lifter issues, but here we are at 172k.
As an example - I'm looking at this place. they have free shipping for the next couple of days, and they offer up to a 7-year warranty (no idea if their warranty is any good or not).

I appreciate any advice anyone has to offer.

You might want to check reviews on that place you linked

You can get a Mopar long block for a decent price here.
Non-MDS Long Block

Or a complete engine, minus the accessories, with or without MDS

I have been hearing some ticking also, in my 5.7L. My plan (when the time comes) is to buy a crate engine 6.4L, not sure about MDS or NON-MDS. I would want to make sure it would pass my state inspection with MDS turned off in the tune, and if so, I would purchase a NON-MDS long block.

Anyway, I would definitely be buying a brand new factory crate engine of some sort. JMHO

Here is a recent thread on an engine from Powertrain Products:

I got my 6.4L from MMX. It was brand new. Free shipping to a business was a killer deal.

I don't know, for gas, but for diesel, I don't think you can go wrong here. A nice little video. They must do gas too. I believe they are in Utah. Now, put a compound turbo on there and pedal to the metal.
