Sold my Impala and Bought this 2016 Laramie 1500 about a month and half ago. First truck since I parked 1978 F150 in 1992 Wife drives a 2012 Grand Cherokee Limited, that she loves. but she sure likes to drive the Ram. First truck she has ever driven and was worried how big it was. Suddenly it’s the vehicle she runs to the store in. I Told her last weekend if she wants to keep driving it she has to get her CCW. I don’t want to have to worry if I leave it in there. I park in the garage.

My wife has talked about getting her CCW for a long time. Just never seems to happen Last week after our talk she scheduled her CCW class with a friiend.
I guess she likes the the truck.

Seems like a win-win, other than you might have lost your truck! The Jeep ain’t a bad consolation.

We traded our 14 2500 6.4 mega in for a 1500 crew so we could lower our payments and pick her up a used grand Cherokee cause she loves them, but now she has decided she doesn’t want a Jeep, she wants the truck lol

Do you need a CCW if you keep a weapon in the truck? Just asking, I know this thread is more about you getting yourself a new truck now that she has adopted the Ram.

In MI you do.

You are able to "transport" the weapon in the vehicle without a CPL. The firearm must be in a locked container (ie. glovebox or firearm box) and the magazine must be out of the firearm in a separate location; such as the trunk. Cannot transport without a CPLwith a magazine in the or the firearm loaded.

Storing the firearm permanently in the vehicle you must have a CPL.

Differs by state, although you can open carry in VA without a CCP, a judge may consider a vehicle as a form of concealing if the loaded weapon is within arms reach, even if it's in plain view on your dashboard. You're also not required to disclose if you are carrying in VA if you get pulled over, but you better be honest if the cop asks. At this point it better be locked up in your trunk if you don't have a CCP.

The laws are crazy how they vary state by state. You are able to open carry in MI as well; better to pay the minimal cost and get your license than worry about the numerous laws and critiques of them. On the plus side in MI the license is good for 5 years.

Nice truck, and nice way to get her to get her CCP. My wife before we got married never touched a gun in her life. The week of our honeymoon we went shooting with my father, the next morning she said she wants to take the class. 2 weeks later shes a card carrying member.

Also to keep a gun in a vehicle you do not need a permit in most states, but the state dictates how many steps or how it is kept in the vehicle.

I think its absolutely insane that gun laws can exist at a state level when we have the second amendment. I live in MA, and I can tell you living in one of the most gun restricted states in the country it is frustrating when they ban guns, and restrict the rights of law abiding people with unclear laws just to jam us up. Yet they let career criminals walk with multiple gun charges. But heaven forbid my AR has a collapsible stock - which would wind me up in jail and strip me of my rights to ever own a firearm in this state again. Seems legit.. And no one, I mean NO ONE will listen to logical solutions in my state. The agenda is clear and pushed no mater how much you try and stop it.

I want my wife to get her CCW also, for the same reason. If I did leave my carry in the truck and she takes the truck, she's in violation of the law.

This is why I live in Texas and don’t drive out of Texas :biggun: Have a 9mm on a go magnet by the seat. But depending on what’s been going on at the farm I will have either a 12g shotgun or a .223 sitting in front seat. The hard part is remembering to remove a beer can from front cup holder when I’m back in the real world

It’s actually murkier than that. Google it and you’ll find commentary like this:

However, if you are otherwise allowed to own a pistol, then you should know that the specific exceptions to MCL § 750.227(2), are found in MCL § 750.231a. One such exception allows for transportation of pistols in a vehicle for a “lawful purpose.” Unfortunately, due to a 2012 amendment to this section, this phrase is no longer defined. Before being taken out “lawful purpose” was defined as going to or from any one of the following:

  • A hunting or target area
  • A place of repair
  • A public shooting facility
  • Public land where shooting is legal
  • Private property where a pistol may be lawfully used.
It is not clear why the Michigan State Legislature decided to retain the phrase “lawful purpose” yet remove the definition of the term.
This is what generated my comment. IANAL but leaving a pistol in a vehicle for a person to drive around who does not have a CPL might be a good way to become a test case. Besides, if is not her pistol and she does not a CPL, that would constitute an unlawful transfer.

FWIW if I told my wife she couldn't drive the truck unless she had her CCW, I'd have a the truck to myself. not a bad deal, but I'd like her to drive the truck, too :)

Your carry should always be on you, period. If you are going into a restricted area thats different, you should have a tamper proof locked container in your car/truck if you must leave it behind. In my state we can carry off body in a car ONLY if you are in direct control - "direct control" is not defined anywhere tho, so its easy to get jammed up if your ever in a situation. I see people try and justify that they need to carry off body in a car because if they get car jacked its easier to draw. I will tell you from a lot of advanced training that if you have to draw that fast you dont have the upper hand in the first place and even reaching for something your dead anyways. Train to draw from a seated position - every scenario is different so try and use the situation to your advantage, but trying to be Jerry Miculek in a high stress situation is completely unrealistic.. Your in a vehicle literally drive off and get away from the threat.

and some carry a spare weapon in the vehicle that is always left there. Not a one-shoe-fits-all solution.

Yeah I get it. but my only concern with that is some one breaking in and finding it. If I found out my gun was used in a crime that would not sit well with me, and my state would make my case a poster child on why we need more gun control.

I could of named other scenarios but didnt want to write a book. Its just my opinion is all, to each their own. But, the cons out weigh the pros in my book. However, if I lived on a farm or in a very small community your damn right I'd have a gun rack in my truck haha. I'm just saying for the average person living in a populated area it dosnt make sense.
