I have a new to me 2009 4.7 SLT Quad Cab. It is coming free from a relative, has decent tires and 185k miles on it. He is older and changed the oil every 3k miles. Runs good, no smoke on cold start and has cold air. Recent repair work was an electric motor for the heater vent door, and bearings in the rear end. Seems to have a tow package (7 pin and 4 pin in the bumper, receiver hitch below). He is losing his vision and asked me to take the truck since he know I take care of my stuff, he would rather give it to me than sell it.

I’m going to change fluids (transmission, rear end, brake, power steering, and coolant) when I get it. I don’t plan on putting too many miles on it since I work from home. I’ll use it for truck stuff, and towing a 4000 pound cargo trailer 80 miles round trip a few times a year.

What are the gotchas I need to watch out for with these trucks? Are there open recalls the dealer would still fix I need to check on? How is the transmission cooling, would I need to add an external cooler?

If it has the towing package it probably has a trans cooler already.
Find out if the trans was ever serviced & when, might be better to leave it be.
Every time I've changed trans fluid in a high mileage vehicle it started slipping afterwards.
Sometimes the old fluid is all that's holding everything together.
