First post ever for me so if I mess up..let me know. I bought a new 2017 1500 SXT 5.7 Hemi 4x4. So far it has 600 total miles on it. The question is, does the mileage get any better than 16-17 mpg or is this something I have to swallow? Do I have any options? Thanks

Is that what the comp is telling you or your figuring it at every gas change? The comp will calculate according to your current driving habits and 600 really won't tell it much. Also do you have the normal or the biggest extended tank?

That’s about normal depending on your driving habits. Spend some time behind the wheel of a HD with the 6.4. We’d kill for that mileage! It takes everything I have just to keep it in the double digits.

for more accurate fuel economy, use a mileage or Fuely app, they are more accurate than the trucks display.

and to think I cringe when I drop below 22mpg with my Ram...lol

But around me diesel is .35 - .40 more per gallon, so it better get that much better just to recoup the difference in fuel cost.

My '08 Hemi 1500 got around 17 on average and a pretty steady 20 on highway trips.
My '15 Hemi 1500 gets about the same, a little better on the open road, like maybe 21, 22.

mind you that is city driving, when I hit the freeway it's around 26mpg(if I drove 55 it would be 28). Even with the 3500lbs boat in tow it will be around 20mpg.
Some people like to mod their trucks so it's fast and/or loud. I prefer mine turbocharged without spark plugs, so diesel fuel is one of my "mods"...lol

My 17 hemi I get anywhere from 16 to 20 around home, back and forth to work, a lot of short trips. Currently on a week's vacation and got 23/23.4 on the way down here, fairly flat driving, no mountains.

My 09 5.7 Hemi SLT QC got about 13-14 if I beat on it and 16 if I didn't. I can't baby a Hemi Ram for more than about 20 minutes tho so, 13-14 was my avg.

PS: Your entire truck, motor included with only 500 miles on it will continue to break in and loosen up and probably net you a little better gas mileage.

MPGs are dependent on a variety of things. If you are doing a majority of stop and go or city driving, kiss your MPG goodbye if you have even a 1500 truck. If you drive a lot in hilly areas, if you gas the truck hard from a stop often. If you brake hard often. If you idle a lot. Short trips. These are all things that are going to tell the truck to laugh in your face on the MPG calculator. That is the nature of a V8. I have been getting 8 MPG lately on my HD LOL.

Also, if your truck is new the MPG will be lower until the engine breaks in more.

That seems pretty accurate for combination Highway/City driving. I have a little bigger tire than stock, and I too have just over 600 miles, and I am avg about 15ish. Traveling at highway speeds (65-70) i will get 18-20.

You bought a vehicle with the aerodynamic properties of a cinder block and an engine that produces around 390 Horsepower. In a 60-70's Muscle car that same HP would have cost you about 7-9 mpg.

I get ~12-13 mpg city and 15-20 MPG freeway depending on winter or summer fuel formulation and traffic. But, I have the old 6 spd not the 8 spd and a 3.55 rear end.

I figure between a freer flowing exhaust and CAI I may be closer to 400 HP, but that just gets the foot into the skinny pedal more--kinda counter intuitive.

I suppose after owning trucks for the last couple of years, I look at it as, I bought a truck, to do truck things, and to tow heavy loads. I did not buy a Prius. The Mileage these newer trucks get compared to days of old, in relation to the amount of horsepower, torque, technology and comfort is mind boggling.

Yep. You can get 25+ MPG on the highway in a 707 HP Hellcat that weighs 4500 pounds. The old muscle cars (as amazingly cool as they are) could barely pull in 10 with not even half the power. Pretty crazy.

I guess fuel mileage was the furthest thing from my mind when I bought it. But then again I didn’t buy it for fuel mileage. 8c8f19addd38038004fc8086d266daa8.jpg
