There were actually 2 variations of the NV4500...the NV4500LD and the NV4500HD...the LD was used in gas trucks with V8's and the HD in the V10 and Cummins trucks...the NV3500 was put in V6 trucks. The HD version has a larger input shaft than the LD...the LD having a 1" shaft and the HD with a 1.25" shaft...and the LD shaft has 19 splines, versus 10 for the HD. The LD was rated for 300 ftlb's of TQ and the HD rated for 460

i'm guessing your truck is 3/4 ton? it was my understanding the 3500 were put in 1/2 tons and 4500 in 3/4 and 1 tons. could be wrong though....but always a good find. i'm hoping to have a 4500 or 5600 in my truck by this time next year. lol

The only difference between a 1/2 ton and a 3/4 ton is springs and axles from my understanding ...

The axles look very similar to my 2500 CTD ones , mine are stamped Dana also like the CTD I had.

This truck is weird IMO .. Dont know why it was built this way , were there build options for these things back in the day ??
And by no means am I complaining .. LOL love the way it was built .

Nope, the 3500 was put in 6 cylinder trucks and the 4500LD in V8 trucks and the 4500HD in V10 and Cummins trucks...

More internet finds that might come in handy for others ..

Motor Trend
Two five-speed manual transmissions were used on the 1994-2001 Dodge Ram; the V6 got the NV3500, and the other engines got the NV4500/NV4500HD. Both were made by New Venture Gear, a joint venture of GM and Chrysler, and had a 1:1 fourth gear; overdrive was .73 and .75, respectively. The NV3500 started with a lower first gear (4.01 vs 5.61) and had lower second and third gears.

So looks like the 5speeds did get the NV4500 in the V8's while the Cummins got the NV4500HD .. while the 6cyl got a NV3500 .

Did I read that right ?

You are correct, Dave. The NV4500HD shared the same gear ratio on 4th and 5th gear, but the 4500LD's 1-3 gears were a little taller than the NV4500HD

I'll find the gear ratio differences in the LD and HD NV4500 and post them up here, just to kind of round out the thread...

Here is some more info

All NV4500 gear boxes had:
Dodge NV4500 transmission to bellhousing bolt pattern (shared with 1995-2005 GM light trucks)

Dodge specific input shaft 7.5" long with a .725" diameter pilot shaft diameter and spline count varies

Concentric internal hydraulic clutch slave cylinder with integrated throwout bearing

1992-1997 2WD gear drive speedometer in tailhousing. (Some 1998 may have gear drive)

From 1998: 2WD had no speedometer gear (VSS in axle)

The NV4500LD (Code DDP)
All years have Dodge small block bellhousing to engine bolt pattern

1992 only: 1" diameter 19 spline input shaft

1993-forward: 1.125" diameter 10 spline input shaft

1992-forward: 2WD 30 spline output

1992-2000: 4WD 23 spline output

2001-forward: 4WD 29 spline output

The NV4500HD (code DDX)
All years used with 5.9 Cummins Turbo Diesel and 8.0 V10

All years 5.9 Cummins Turbo Diesel and 8.0 V10 bellhousing to engine bolt pattern

All years 1.25" diameter 10 spline input shaft

All years 2WD 31 spline output

All years 4WD 29 spline output

I was incorrect with the two different gear ratio used between the LD and HD NV4500, it was GM that used two different ratio among their two 4500 gear boxes.

Yeah... I would've preferred the 5.61 in my '97's reverse gear.

Ramhunter's find & excitement reminds me of the day I learned my Challenger's 6-spd was an SRT-8 version TREMEC
