I changed my oil and filter today. I switched to Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20 full synthetic with a mopar filter. I felt like the blend the dealership uses is for their bottom line, not mine. Anyway, so i changed it myself. The manual calls for 7 quarts in the 5.7 Hemi. It seems it was a little short of that when I looked at the oil I removed. After filling and driving around for a few minutes, I checked and the oil on the dip stick was higher than the safe mark. I am not concerned, the manual says 7 quarts, 7 quarts it is. Any explanation as to why this would be, if it calls for 7 quarts why is it on the high side of the dip stick?

Just curious, thanks for any clarity on this.

Oh, and I checked it before changing the oil and it was on the high side from the dealerships oil change as well.

There is always left over oil in the engine and pan. In the neighborhood of 1/2 quart

Let a little drain out.

There is half quart in the filter. I only put in 6 quarts with every other filter change.

I always leave 1/2 a quart out. Run the truck for a few minutes, check the oil and add from there if needed.

I wouldn't worry about it being just fractionally above the full mark on the dipstick.

Some of the oil is going to vaporize and get drawn out through the PCV system over time anyway and you'd have to be way overfilled before the crankshaft started splashing in oil :)

Just do what we do in the military.... overfill it as much as possible. Count the drips, "if she ain't leaking, we ain't flying"
