Oh man an oil thread!

1fbgn1.jpg

Funny thing I use the exact same oil on my six year old 41k mile Ram 5.7, my six year old 120k mile Jeep 2.4, my wife's 20 year old 180k mile Mustang 3.8 and my 28 year old 250k mile Mustang 5.0 - whatever premium brand synthetic 5w20 is on sale. Usually that means Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec, sometimes Castrol Biosynthetic when I can find it.

For the most part oil is oil though and people get way too wound up about it. All you really need to do is actually change the dang stuff every few thousand miles.. nothing more nothing less.

At least the OP didn’t ask what the best oil filter is.........

I use the best oil.I use the best filter. No one else can or does.lol. I bought my truck at about that same mileage and run Havoline pro ds in a 6 qt earth friendly box from walmart for $19.95.And mostly mopar or fram silver filters or maybe a napa. There are hundreds of threads about running Redline oil.But I'm just too poor and/or cheap to pay a small fortune for oil.And if my engine explodes from not using it then screw it anyway!

For a truck with 115k miles and no tick, this may be the better choice no doubt. With a high mileage truck, I would consider 5w30, but I like using inexpensive synthetic oils such as this or kirkland as the top lubrication strategy. No way would I switch to redline unless I had hemi tick, then I would take the chance. However, I would at a minimum use a spun microglass filter or a blend, this is worth the couple dollars it takes. Royal Purple, Amsoil EA, Wix XP, Puro Boss synthetic, and even fram ultra or m1 which both are blended filters are worth it for filtering throughout the interval, my 2 pennys on that.

6 qts at 20 bucks even grouplll? is better than conventional for 17-18 for 5 qts.Nothing like wallyworld.lol And saving the earth isn't my forte but money saving is! I'll just do my part to keep the earth warm for those "other folks" I guess, even though I aint real crazy about the box it actually works well.

Shell Oil Products United States (SOPUS) owns both the Pennzoil and Quaker State Brands. Both brands have been highly rated in test for film strength and shear stability. I don't recall how much antiwear MoDTC additive is in each.

Also wondering if Shell uses the same recipe for these.

I've been using Napa oil and filter in all of the vehicle's I ever owned for years. I had almost 200k miles on a Nissan Xterra and it was as quiet and dependable as it was when it was new. I traded that in for an 11 Ram Bighorn 5.7 and it was as quiet as a church mouse. I haven't made it to the 1st oil change on my new 21 BTS 5.7 yet but I will use Napa oil in this one too. They run specials from time to time too

Amsoil.

Made from dead American dinosaurs....
It is more humane to make it from a dead dinosaur...and isn't a little strange that that oil is going into a "Ram" truck? From a dino to a Ram.lol

Use nothing but Mobil 1 extended performance and recommended weighs on all three on my RAMs, 2016-2017-2020. All 5.7L. Combined mileage of over 240K. Never any engine problem of any kind. Oil change at 5000 miles always. Mopar oil filter always.

My neighbor's lab/factory in LA makes the additives for motor oil. His take on it is that a premium motor oil is a premium motor oil. As long as it meets the specs in your owner's manual, has the SAE stamp and says it is for gasoline engines, it is good. Walmart oil and MOPAR oil are made by Pennzoil.

My 17RAM 1599 BigHorn with the 5.7 has 96,000 miles. I have changed to oil between 5,000, and 7,000 miles. It still shows less then 1/4 quart use betweeen oil changes.

Ram V10, 160,000 miles, Mobile 1 5w30 and Napa Gold 1773, made by Wix, Wix number is 51773. Extra long filter that provides more volume, better filtration, also works for the 5.2 and 5.9 etc. Oi and filter change very 12,000 miles. Burns zero oil between oil changes.

The hotshot division had dozens of the V10s back in the day. They easily ran trouble free motor wise on that change schedule for 5 to 6 hundred thousand miles. A few went over the million mile mark.
