Anybody got any suggestions on how to keep from making a mess when changing the oil filter. Im getting tired of spending 15 minutes just wiping oil off of everything under the filter. I tried cutting some plastic to fit under it but it is already tight trying to get my hand around the filter to turn it. I looked online and thought about one of those form-a-funnel things. Thoughts?

I take a windshield washer gallon and cut it on the long. So imagine now you have like an 8x11 tray (leave about a half inch lip so the oil doesnt come out) and leave the handle intact. Slack your oil filter. Position the tray directly under the filter, basicly sitting on top of the frame and steering rack. Slowly undo the filter so it doesnt fall and splash. Be ready with the new filter or a rag so when you carefully remove the tray you can quickly reinstall the filter or put a rag there so nothing drips down.
This is how i do it with absolutely zero cleanup. Took me a while to figure it out, ive tried the funnels and the form a funnels and the wrapping it in a bag, they all ended up making a mess. I hate cleaning up more than inventing new ways so there you go.

great idea. I use the bag method with limited success. I will try this on my next change. Thanks!

BTW, get the Fumoto quick drain valve for the plug, it's worth its weight in gold.

Do you guys pre fill your new filters with oil, or do you just do a quick swap with a new/empty one?

I do it just for fun on my hemi because i like to but i dont for anybody else, on gas engines its a waste of time and not required.

However, on cummins and any diesel with a spin on filter underneath i always prefill the filter. Usually can get in about a quart, more if you are patient. This is important because it takes a while for the filter to fill up and start circulating oil and nobody wants the oil pump to starve right!

Cut a 2-liter bottle in half.

Remove oil filter "inside" the bucket of the 2-liter. Works like a charm.

Loosen filter, slip a gallon freezer bag over it and spin off into the bag.
