I have a 2011 1500 4.7l. my 8000 miles were almost up so i dropped it off @ pepboys and had them put royal purple oil and a royal purple filter on it. They called me 10 mins later and said that they dont have a royal purple filter with a "valve" and that is what the computer says my truck needs. they said they were going to use a K & N oil filter because it has a valve. I am totally cool with that filter but was wondering what the hell they were talking about. I never got the chance to talk in detail about it with them, they just said they didnt want to screw up my warranty by putting the royal purple filter on. The guys up there are reliable and i have been taking my vehicles to them for years now. but sometimes i change the oil my self and i guess i would have never known about this so called valve!

I agree with scotts2012, as far as i know ALL oil filters have ADBVs. The only variance i have heard of is if the valve is made of silicone or regular rubber.
From what I have read about RP oil filters they have a really good reputation similar to K&N Mobil1, Bosch and OEM brands.
Pepe Boys may have been out of the RP filter and subbed in a K&N, but they are both a similar quality with very good filter media and ADBV in both of them.
Hope this helps

oh yeah I didnt mind the K & N at all, i was thinking about asking if they carried them but decided to just keep doing RP filter like on all my filters. either way its not like i was wanting a Fram and they tricked me into the K & N! I just thought it was wierd.

Anti drain valves are only installed in OEM engine oil filters where the vehicle manufacturer has requested it [OEM].

Not all aftermarket engine oil filters have anti-drain valves.

Example: Purolator PureOne engine oil filters and - I've heard - Mann engine oil filters do NOT have drain valves

The K&N is the next best the RP has a full synthetic media they have a video on the RP site about them. I run the K&N and RP oil good stuff.

Grubrunner go look up a filter oem than look at the rest there built on the same bases. Oem has nothin to do with it. That valve is there so the filter oil dose not drain and then it has prime the system every start. No not every filter has one but if the factory filter has one any aftermarket one will have it

If the oem has one you better be sure you are running an aftermarket filter with one as well.
They have to match oem specs. The bypass is so if the filter gets full it will open and allow oil to flow not to starve the engine. Each oem sets the limit at what psi it opens.

Not true..... if I can make out what it is you're saying.

If an OEM engine oil filter for a particular vehicle comes with an ADBV [as recommended by the manufacturer] and you were to purchase a Purolator PureOne engine oil filter for that same vehicle, then you will NOT have an ADBV as PureOne filters do NOT have them.

OEM [recommendations/specifications] has everything to do with it.

I heard that engine oil never really goes bad...and if you just change your filters...you actually never need to change your oil...or at least in far fewer intervals. Thoughts?

Oil in a motor does go bad I've seen oil seating in a motor not running for 4 months drain it out and just a black as the oil in my daily driver. Oil get contaminates in it from the motor its self and it breaks down from heat cycling

For the record the Purolator Pureone not only comes with an ADBV (PL24651 for the Hemi) but in fact is one of the best designed units if not the best on the market.

I've never seen a filter w/o one -- in all the 20+ cars I've had. They didn't have the correct RP filter in stock. K&N is an excellent filter as well, and will be easier for them to remove next time.
