This has me questioning using the Mobil 1 I bought for the wife's car that efficiency is rated at 30 microns.

Wasn't there a time when Mobil 1 was made by Champ Labs they were near Royal Purple clones? 20 micron 99%

M1 as far as I know has always been paper/synthetic.

Paper will always have a different micron rating in use.

Yeah, I know that is the spec now - I'm talking about a couple years ago before the filtration market went into turmoil.

Carquest update - I can not find the Carquest Extended performance at the stores - either Carquest or Advance Auto.

Put I looked into the Carquest Premium Part No. 84060 for the 6.4l, larger Part # 85372
  • Synthetic blend media provides 99.5% efficiency at 20 microns and 2X capacity vs. Standard filters

This is higher efficency then the Extended Performance!!!!

The boss is not that good:
Micron Rating: 99% efficiency at >46 microns.

Fram Ultra synthic
Micron Rating: 99%+ efficiency at >20 microns.

Mobi1
Micron Rating/Efficiency: 99%+ efficiency at 30+ microns.
Of all the posts in this thread, this is the first one that mentions actual filtration efficiency, which should be the primary consideration for a filter. The plethora of amateur 'cut apart some filters' and judge on materials is meant more for those that want to say "Gee, I made a video and got clicks." Testimonials of brands really doesn't inform.

If it is true Fram is out-of-business what I'd like to know is who makes a 99% efficient oil filter at 20 microns?

EDIT:

Dusty,
Thanks for the mention.

Taking apart filters is meaningless. It is for clicks.

Testing any product is about, testing the object of the product (e.g. filtration, construction for the intended purpose).

The other thing is that the balance for the intended purpose. For oil filters it is filtration and oil flow. It makes no sense to have 99.99% of 5 microns if the oil flow isn't what the engine needs.

I use Lugard for oil and it is not filtered out by an oil filter while others are.

Lubegard Bio-Tech Engine Oil Protectant is a liquid, not a solid particle additive, and therefore does not have a "micron size." Unlike solid lubricants (e.g., PTFE, moly) that can clog filters, Lubegard uses liquid wax ester (LXE) technology that dissolves in oil, designed to reduce friction and wear. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

----------

As to FRAM, many places are selling them at clearence prices and can't be found at the Walmarts I looked at. The question is will FRAM get that distribution back.
--------------

The Carquest looks like a very good filter to me.

Thanks,
Carquest Extended Performance (EP) oil filters are manufactured by MANN+HUMMEL, who also owns Purolator. They are designed for synthetic oil, providing protection for up to 10,000 to 20,000 miles depending on the specific model. These filters feature a high-quality, synthetic blend media designed to be a durable alternative to OEM brands. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]
  • Manufacturer: Mann+Hummel (since they took over from previous suppliers).
  • Performance: The Extended Performance (EP) line is designed to compete with high-end synthetic filters, often compared to the Purolator Boss and offering high efficiency, sometimes rated as 99.5% at 20 microns.
I didn't realize Mann&Hummel was the manufacturer for both of those. I've used 2 Purolator filters in the last 8 years on a hemi and both have leaked at the gasket. I know at least one was a Boss. Never had another brand filter leak like that, not sure if there is something different about the gasket they use or I just happened to get a bad one a couple times.

I know that this subject has been hashed out for ever but.. and I am not seeking to open a major thread here but with the demise of FRAM our choices are becoming quite limited.
I am a maintenance nut, I change my engine oils before 5000 miles, I use factory recommended oils with recommended viscosity ratings. We have 6 of these HEMI's currently. ( one virgin with 180K One with 150K never an engine problem)
Now to the MEAT. I have used FRAM filters on all of our cars and trucks for many years, always the upgraded ones. Last couple of years the FV2 for the HEMI's both 5.7 and 6.4. Now the Fram filters are unavailable it seems anyplace. (Bankruptcy seems to be the cause). I have checked high and low,, nun, nada, notthn no place.
I have tried looking at other brands but there doesn't seem to be anything out there that compares with capacity and quality of the actual filter material for synthetic motor oils. The MOPAR MO399 is a joke, The Mobil1 M1-113 is the same size and construction of the MOPAR filter..

NOW Has anyone out there found a quality filter with synthetic specific filtration and with sufficient capacity to take care of our beloved HEMI's ???
Wicks or Ram, looks like the carbord gaskets finally caught up with them.

I use mopar, delco, motorcraft. With a magnet on all. Never had any issues. The hemi filters could’ve been larger. When I think how big the 302ford filters use to be on the 60,70,80,90 filters. It was like a small coffee can. I used to put the longer truck 302 filters on my mustangs & moms Crown Vic. If there was room.

2024 Ram 3500, 6.4l Hemi. I was using the Royal Purple #20-500, which was a larger size can & element. Unfortunately, the First Brands bankruptcy has taken out multiple filter brands, including Fram and R.P. I started looking into Wix filters because I've used them on other vehicles with good results, but what I found was surprising. Like many, I use full synthetic oils and believe in changing oil around 5,000 miles. Like other filter brands, Wix makes a standard (cellulose) element, and a performance (composite) element, the XP. Filter # 57502 or 57502XP cross-refer to the R.P. #20-500. But the standard Wix performs better, stripping out 99% of 23 micron particles. Reading carefully, the XP filters are designed for longer oil change intervals, not necessarily higher performance. So I'm going for the standard Wix 57502, have one on order to compare to my sole remaining R.P. #20-500 before I use it. Too bad so many good oil filter manufacturers were taken out with this over-leveraged private equity disaster.

Here are some comparative results from a Ford discussion board;
Wix 51372 / NAPA Gold 1372:
Beta Ratio: 2/20 = 12/25 (Wix Data)
What the Beta Ratio means is listed below
(um = micron, 1 millionth of a meter). * a human hair thickness is ~ 70 microns *

2/20 = 12/25 means:
1 in 2 particles will get past filter media (50% filtration efficiency) at 12um
1 in 20 particles will get past filter media (95% filtration efficiency) at 25um

50% @ 12um; 95% @ 25um; 99% @ 23um (NAPA Gold Data shows a bit better performance, again Wix and NAPA Gold are the same filters)

11 to 13 GPM flow (Wix Data)

Wix 51372XP / NAPA Platinum 41372:
Beta Ratio: ?

62% @ 20um (Oreilly’s Data); 88% @ 35um (Oreilly’s Data);
11 to 13 GPM flow (Wix Data) *Same flow rate data as the better filtering regular Wix / NAPA Gold.
I would of expected the Wix XP / NAPA Platinum flow to be better....But no.

For what it's worth ! Probably take a few years for manufacturing to re-establish itself, it's not like oil filter demand is fading away anytime soon......

I see a bunch of Fram Titanium filters which seem identical perhaps better than their Ultra Synthetic and has
wire backing behind filter medium. Same 99% 20micron... any feedback on those? Tks!

Have y'all checked K&N oil filters? They have a hex nut shape on the end. This makes changing it on my Power Wagon much easier because I can just put a socket on it.

I’ve seen a couple engine guys switch to the MO899 for the extra capacity and extra filtering media. The filter uses the same thread size and overall length however the filter is a larger diameter and there has been some suggestion of clearance issues with a line or a hose close to it. Same cost as original. Next oil change I’m going to switch to the larger if I have the room
